About Samantha
Just one semester away from receiving my teaching license, I am thrilled to have my own classroom soon. What led me to teaching was the time I saw a lightbulb flip on in a young man’s eyes when he learned something that would change his life forever. It was the time I laid awake one night and realized suddenly, that knowledge is one of the most valuable things we can possess on Earth.

As a practicum student teacher, my enthusiasm excited my 5th grade students about math, English, science and social studies concepts as they discovered knowledge through critical and analytical thinking. When students asked me questions, I often asked them a question right back-one that encouraged them to problem solve. As they searched for the answer, a lightbulb would flip on, and suddenly, the knowledge was theirs. These moments are what most motivate me as a teacher.

The first step is to build a relationship of trust: get to know the student, let them get to know me, and help them see me as as a real person who cares about them.
Depending on the subject, I may run a diagnostic assessment. For example, if we are talking about reading, I ask them a few questions about how they view themselves as a reader and how much they read at home. Based on their responses, I ask them to read a passage that is on their grade level. During the reading, I assess fluency, accuracy, prosody, and rate. After the reading I ask the student a few comprehension questions. This gives me an idea of where
