About DeJuan

The thing I try to do is understand where you--the student--are coming from. I am curious in understanding how to communicate with someone as precisely and concisely as possible so that a concept just makes sense. Whether that means digging deeper into the Pythagorean Theorem, learning "tricks of the trade" to solve quadratic equations mentally, or even connecting Calculus to basic arithmetic--I answer your questions, in your language (well, as well as the discipline allows).

I carry with me a decade of experience as a math facilitator: six years at a local private school and 4 as a tutor, the last two with students across the country. While I have always been a solid math student myself, I have learned that there is one thing often missing from the learning process: making sense of, rather than memorizing, the concept. As I work to complete my Master's Degree in Education, I am accepting a more cognitivistic approach to learning. That makes my method much more about filling in gaps in understanding and reteaching concepts (though I can produce a less-formal lecture on command, also).

Working remotely, I generally ask for students to have any sort of writing device, whether virtual, digital, or analog. Most importantly, though, I ask my students to bring their willingness to ask questions.

I started tutoring while completing my coursework at the University of Kansas in 2009; this was a bit discontinuous, though. My work with students in the greater Seattle area has solidified my desire to teach and tutor.

I've taught at a local private school that specializes in individualized instruction for 6 years. I am also currently in a Masters' in Teaching program (with a penchant for curriculum, assessment, and instruction methodology).

I like to get a sense of what we're doing and what you understand about it first; I find this is the best way to establish what the goals are in each session. From there, I work to be efficient; it's challenging to spend more time learning or relearning something, especially once frustration sets in.

I have worked with neurodiverse students, students with odd schedules, younger students, adult students, advanced students, students trying to make up credits (especially over the last few years) or meet an advanced pace...frankly, everyone.

Do ask questions about what makes math (or science, or even the very act of studying) difficult. As nice as it is to work through and find correct or reasonable answers to questions, it is also important to understand what questions you want to ask.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Considering the process I try to undertake when 'diagnosing', I recommend self-assessing on skill, memory, and concept for any given lesson. Additionally--and challenging as it might be--I also recommend understanding how you learn as a student: are you a listener, reader, or producer, for example.

Generally, I aim for $35 per hour per student. I am willing to work with as many as four students simultaneously (i.e., in an hour) for an additional $25/15/10 (presuming the same subject and lesson).

I can also assist with curriculum and assessment design for homeschool hosts. Please call for quotes; these rates are negotiable.

I keep my cancellation and late policies very lenient because...life happens. Generally, notice up to 24 hours AFTER scheduled time will probably be forgiven.
