About Emma

I love teaching, and I love math! I am a freshman at the University of Washington. I know how to explain concepts in multiple ways, and from multiple angles until a student understands the concept. I always teach with absolutely no judgement - no stupid questions, only answers no matter what. Learning math is hard for a lot of people, but I love showing friends and students that there's nothing to be scared of.

I have a score of 5 (out of 7) on the IB Higher-Level mathematics exam. I ran and participated in the Mu Alpha Theta math tutoring at my high school, and led an ACT math prep course.

I can't wait to work with you or your student. Have a fantastic day!

In 3rd grade, my teacher lost her voice, and couldn't read our storytime book out loud to the class. Collectively, with no input from me, my class started yelling that she should just let Emma read instead.

Since then, I've led multiple lessons for math classes at my old high school, and run my after-school tutoring programs.

In the summer, I work as a Camp Counselor as well. I love teaching, and helping kids.

I have completed all required high school math courses, as well as advanced courses including Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, and Calc 1.

I ran a tutoring program and ACT math prep course at my high school for 2 years.

I am currently attending the University of Washington, aspiring to a software engineering program.

First, we talk for a few minutes just to get comfotable with each other - I can't be helpful if you feel intimidated or uncomfortable!

Next, we'll talk about what math class you're in, and what the current issue is. Finally, we'll talk for a bit about any past struggles with math, to make sure there aren't any older or more fundamental concepts to address first.

This is also when I'd love to know if you have any learning styles that work for you, or any other learning disabilities that might affect our work together. Nothing wrong with that - it just changes how I'll work with you!

Then, it's time to start learning!

I've generally worked with my peers, assisting friends and classmates with understanding the concepts we were learning in class.

One of my favorite "students" was one of my best friends, who I took pre-calculus with in 10th grade. She was really strugling, so I offered to help her. It took a while, because her issues were actually algebra and arithmetic based. She was so embarrassed that she didn't want to tell me. But, I didn't judge or laugh. Instead, I helped her figure it out, and she ended up passing the class with a B - she told me it was her highest ever grade in a Math class since elementary school.

Make sure you know that their first priority is to help you learn. Passing tests and finishing homework is important, but learning the concepts is broader than getting the answers.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Do I trust this person? Do they have my best interests at heart?

If someone is teaching, it's probably because they love it, and they love you. But it is always important to find someone who you trust, and you know will be supportive and nonjudgemental when telling them about any issues you have.
