About Angie

I enjoy supporting students who are learning to solve problems, model real-life phenomena, and wish to improve that mathematical tool kit. I have been a certified secondary school mathematics teacher since the early nineties and have gone on to earn an MS and PHD in mathematics in the early 2000's. I have enjoyed teaching and mentoring at regional universities and am looking to assist students pursuing a career in math, science, computer science or teaching. I also love music--sing, play piano and harp. For students who are nervous or anxious when it comes to studying mathematics, I can offer compassionate and creative support.

I graduated from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN in 1990 with a BS in Secondary Mathematics Education. Instead of completing the basic teaching internship, I traveled to New Mexico and did my student teaching with students of the Navajo nation in a BIA middle school. (Many students lived in dormitories during the week).

I was a residence assistant for my junior and senior years of university. I also was counselor for church camp for several years as a young adult and young spouse.

I have taught middle grades, high school (algebra up to AP Calculus II) and university undergraduate courses (including linear algebra, statistics, and differential equations).

Most recently, I have been studying machine learning and Deep Learning as it relates to image recognition. My colleagues include a faculty member from MTSU and a civil engineer in the Indiana Department of Transportation.

I have been teaching for 30 years; have tutored and have lead teacher training workshops. I am passionate about helping others find a road into learning and making their own meaning from the mathematics we explore.

About the lesson

Typically, I meet with student for an initial session (20-30 minutes, discounted rate) and get information about the student. I want to get to know what aspects of learning and problem solving that a student likes and finds benficial. I want to know the goals of the student and parent and line out some short term and long term objectives.

During the first session or two I will spend the first 10 - 15 minutes reviewing the students objectives and working through some problems that will allow me to pinpoint student strengths and allow student to communicate what they find challenging.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
University and college students might want to check with their math department and see if the department offers free tutoring. The university or college student might want to pay for private tutoring once per week and then meet more informally and more often with graduate students or math majors for assistance with homework.

I have worked with peer tutors over the semesters and combining discussions with faculty and fellow students can be an effective way of more deeply understanding mathematics.

Details

Currently, I charge $40 an hour, with discount for students who schedule multiple meetings each week. For example, with payment before the week's tutoring starts, I charge $100 for a package of three hours.
