About Conor
Hi! My name is Conor Grogan. I am a graduate of William Paterson University's prestigious jazz studies program for jazz guitar performance. I have been playing many styles of music for over 15 years and I have been teaching professionally since 2015. I am a passionate music educator who is highly motivated to help my students achieve their individual musical goals. I have ample experience teaching all ages (including children as young as 3) and individuals with special needs.
It gives me immense satisfaction when I can help a student discover the joy of music. That is my ultimate goal, to help a student attain a lifelong love of music and playing the guitar.
I began playing guitar at the age of 12. I began studying privately with a phenomenal teacher within a year. I continued with that teacher until college. Additionally, I began studying with a virtuoso jazz guitarist when I was 15. It was under his tutelage that I transferred to a performing arts high school to further my music education. I was accepted to the prestigious jazz studies program at William Paterson University on partial scholarship for talent. There I studied with some of the greatest jazz musicians of all time, including Mulgrew Miller, Harold Mabern, Gene Bertoncini, Paul Meyers, Vincent Herring, and many others. Additionally, I also pursued independent study with several legendary jazz guitarists including Pat Martino, Vic Juris, Dave Stryker, and James Chirillo. I continue to work diligently on becoming the greatest guitarist and music educator I can be.

I tailor my approach to the needs of each individual student. In a first lesson students can expect to go over the fundamentals of music (rhythm, melody, and harmony) and then learn simple examples of each of these concepts. I also go over the anatomy of the guitar, the names of the strings, how tuning works, etcetera.
I use a mixture of academic music study (music theory, learning how to read standard music notation, etc.) and more "fun" oriented exercises where I can still educate students on many fundamentals of music. Examples of fun exercises include teaching students simple songs they are familiar with and helping them create their own simple songs. I find this helps keep students enthusiastic about learning guitar while simultaneously working on very important fundamentals. The biggest obstacle for beginners is discouragement and lack of interest. I strive to always keep my students engaged and excited about learning guitar.
I have worked with students of all ages including children as young as 3. I have taught many beginners who have never touched the instrument before as well as many advanced students. I have ample experience teaching individuals with special needs. I strive to always be a patient, compassionate, educator with all of my students.
I frequently attend jazz concerts, including playing guitar at the various 'jazz jam sessions' throughout New York City and beyond.
