About Tim

I have been in love with the art and skill of musical composition and related topics since forever. I've always done/will do every thing I can to help sincere and serious students to succeed in becoming more adept.

My efforts as an arranger began in junio high school -- middle school's the US equivalent-- in eastern Canada. I started composing music (i.e., putting musical ideas together to make up songs) a few years after when I was a high school senior in Illinois.

Learning to actulally write my stuff down -- which is not the same composing -- came more slowly (painfully, even) after I started formal study. It was through often challenging undergrad courses at Acadia University in theory, ear training, modal and tonal counterpoint, orchestration, musical form and analysis, and ESPECIALLY music history that I really learned the basics of true composition... and I stress the word "basics" here.

Graduate and post grad. study in musicology and comp./theory built on that essential groundwork. Studying close up the scores of Schoenberg, Mahler, Schubert, Bach, and Stravinsky was eye-opening for me. Independant studies in vocal performance practice helped me understand the need for a firm grasp of variation.

This is essential no matter what the stylistic surface of the sonic architecture that's being built.

I hope this gives you a thumb-nail skecth-type idea of "where I am at," and look forward to contact and discussion leading to... who knows where?

Everybody's situation is different. Each one has strengths, and each has weaknesses to work on. I enjoy learning what these are and helping people to get stronger in all areas... even ones they may not know about yet.

I have an undergraduate degree in music (history, theory, vocal performance) from Acadia University. I've also completed three grad./post grad programs (musicology and composition/theory) from the University of Illinosi at Urbana-Champaign.

Throughout my education I was active as a teaching assistant and private tutor. I also taught composition and compostion pedagogy for such on-line outfits as the Vermont Midi Project, now called Music-Comp, the Netcomm Telementoring Project (UIUC), and Mic-Net (Northwestern).

I'm also a professional level singer and have years of experience as a conductor.

About the lesson

I start by talking to my students at some length. That way I an idea of their background is and what their goals are. After doing that I can start making suggestions how to proceed... which often includes strong encouagement to get as solid a grounding in the basics as possible.
