About Katrena

I am a science teacher in Ohio who teaches Life science, Physical Science, and Earth Science. I am also a licensed Social studies teacher. I have four years of experience working with students to create an understanding and passion for science and history. I love to think of new ways to explain a topic so that every student can make connections and truly understand what they are being taught.

I have had a passion for becoming a teacher since high school when I began to see the effects that my mother (a social studies teacher) had on her students. As I began to start the process of gaining my Education degree, I became more empassioned and dedicated to my goal of becoming a teacher.

I am an Ohio licensed teacher for grades 4-9 in science and social studies. I have been working as a teacher for four years and had prior experience with tutoring while pursuing my degree. I am currently pursuing my Masters in Curriculum and Instructional strategies to become a more effective educator.

About the lesson

I would begin by establishing their level of understanding with the material and helping them build a solid base for the topic. I would then work with them through examples, practice problems, and real-world situations to create a strong understanding of the material and its importance.

I have worked with students from every background (racial/ethnic, socioeconomic, ability, community, grade level, etc.) at some point. My college program made sure that we had experience working with students from varied backgrounds to help us become more aware and prepared for our careers.

Having a personal passion and interest in science makes it a thousand times easier to educate others on the subject material. Avoid science teachers who lack passion in teaching or in science. By finding a teacher with passion, you are more likely to find someone who is willing to think of a dozen different examples to explain a topic and will make the material exciting to learn.

Every time that I see a 'lightbulb' moment with my students, I am reminded of why I love to teach and why I began this career in the first place. There is nothing better then seeing a struggling student become engaged and/or finally grasp a concept that we have been working on.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should realize that teachers are hear to help their students and, in order to do so, need to know where they are struggling. A student who is able to voice their confusions, frustrations, or issues is more likely to get the structured support that they need to be successful.
