About Jamie

I am an MA Japanese graduate of SOAS, University of London, offering online Japanese tutoring to new or intermediate learners of the language. I graduated with Merit, earning High Distinction in all language components of my degree.

I have lived in Japan, in Port Island, Kobe and really focus my lessons on building confidence and proficiency with the language. It's not a hard language to learn if you break the grammar down into chunks!

About the lesson

I break down Japanese into Grammar, Vocab and Kanji, with a combined approach to reading, speaking, and listening.

I've created my own resources and lesson plans to support total beginners and intermediates in a structured way.

I can pace the lessons to be as intensive or relaxed as you'd like - I've noticed that online resources tend to baby Japanese language learners, especially when it comes to reading and writing. I can usually have my learners reading hiragana and katakana within 2 weeks.

We are several lessons in and progress is steady. Timea is always ready for the lesson to start at our agreed time and is quick to pick up on grammar points.

Things that are going well:
Grammar uptake
Reading (I really think this is in part due to your use of Anki, the improvement in character recognition was really significant after using it!)

Things to study up on would be:
Tenses (ます、ました、ません、ませんでした)
Vocab - memorising a handful of words per each lesson so you can come up with your own sentences more easily :)
Speaking Japanese during the lesson: even if it’s a mix of English and Japanese, it will help you remember things, especially if you make mistakes and have them corrected.
