About Carolyn

Born into a creative family, I've been working as an artist for the last 30+ years in Southern California. Because I don't have a single, "set style", I am not limited, therefore teaching is a delight! I work in almost every medium, including oils, acrylics, mixed media, collage, painted glass panels. I've also done numerous full-scale murals and lots of original art for the hospitality industry (hotels and restaurants in Southern California). I emphasize creativity and 'enjoying the journey', not just the finished result/destination! My work has been featured in publications including the Music page & editorials in Playboy Magazine. I have many private collectors and a lot of custom work throughout the western U.S. and locales in Asia. Over the years I've often thought of teaching and now that I have, I love the delight on students faces as they create their own original art - it is an incredible feeling. It may sound corny but I love sharing that joy!

I love the entire process of creating whether it's a small piece of art or craft item, to large full-scale public installations. I love color! I love working with various media. I love not always knowing exactly what I'm going to do but letting the work evolve. In this process you discover things about yourself and working with students, you learn even more : seeing "the light go on", seeing their excitement, working through their frustration, resolving an issue...at the end being pleased with what they created! With over 30+ years working as an artist, I have worked in in gallery settings, with interior designers and architects and individual collectors. I'm able to focus on the needs of the client and create original work that adds beauty to the space, that clients love. I'm very flexible to work with, I keep ego out of it and and my ultimate goal is the delight of the client(s). I intended to go to art school but instead have had extensive "on-the-job training". Self-taught, yes, and truly enjoy sharing what I've learned with others.

About the lesson

If it's one-on-one, I learn the type of work they're drawn to and why, discover their goals, and learn as much about their expectations as possible as well as their level of experience. Upon learning their interests and expectations, we will proceed in creating & techniques and build from there, depending on their level of experience. I'm a positive person by nature and adept at encouraging people, while guiding them in the learning process. I put myself in their place: how do I like to be treated? I offer guidance and correction as needed but in a friendly, constructive manner. If it is a group of students with mixed levels of abilities, we will use another painting as inspiration. I would also like to do more group lessons with deeper levels of instruction and techniques. I welcome feedback from students as well, so I can learn and grow, improving my abilities as a teacher and as an artist.

Details

I am more motivated by sharing & joyj, than a profit motive so I keep my prices fair: $48 a lesson/2 hours. 4+ lessons booked & paid in advance, $40/lesson. Group student rates available by request - fee varies depending on the subject, media used, time creating it. Single students or larger groups, within a 20 mile radius, there is no travel fee involved.
