About Donovan

I first learned oil painting using the Bob Ross "wet on wet" technique when I was about 12. After that I studied at the Fine Arts Institute in Edmond, OK, where I expanded on my oil techniques and also trained in watercolor. During college I was commissioned to paint murals using latex wall paint at the Sooner Legends Inn & Suites. More recently, I have worked into my own style and have largely converted to acrylic, as it is simply an easier medium to handle.

I have been commissioned for dozens of portraits, murals, sketches, and other small jobs over the years. I also currently have about two dozen canvas acrylics hanging for sale at a local tattoo parlor / art gallery. I once went through the Grumbacher certification process in order to teach classes at Michael's, but they stopped doing that when covid hit. So I am now hoping to find pupils to mentor here.

I am looking to guide students, passing on my hard-learned lessons to help them flourish. My hope is that I can provide guidance, tips, and tricks that will help them avoid pitfalls that I went through in my artistic journey. I want your artwork to ultimately blow mine away.

I have given private sketching lessons, but painting lessons would be a first for me. I just recently began to feel that I have reached a place where I have something worthwhile to share, and I would like to pass on my knowledge and help mentor other artists.

About the lesson

I would like to initially assess their skill set and interests. Then I would guide them as they work on various challenges that engage various specific techniques that will help them grow as an artist and improve their work.

Consider your goals. Are you wanting to pursue a career in art, a side hustle, a hobby? Do you want to be a street/graffiti artist, an impressionist, a surrealist? Do you simply want to make some nice pieces to hang in your house or give to friends and family? Are you proficient in one medium and looking to work in another?

Once you have goals in mind, select an artist that you feel fits the mold you would like to emulate. If you want to be a graffit artist or to work on murals and public art installations, for example, someone who does acrylic portraits only would not be able to provide you with much in your area of interest.

Personally, I am a bit limited in that my work has largely been in acrylic, oil, and latex wall paint. I would not be a great teacher for watercolor, prismacolor, spray paint, or pastel. But if you are looking to work in oil, acrylic, or sketch, I bring a lot to the table that can really help you improve your own artwork. I have the ability to recreate virtually any 2d image spot on, and I know how to teach that skillset.

For virtual, I am looking to charge $25 per 1 hour session or $40 per 2 hour session.

If in-person is preferred, I would change $30 per 1 hour session or $50 per 2 hour session in my home office.

If I need to travel to you, my quote will increase based on distance.

Regardless of the setting, you will have my full attention during these 1 on 1 meetings.
