Experience in approach to creating Public Art:

Historical Sign-age: Each Island has their own unique qualities. On Maui we have the famous I’ao Needle located in I’ao Valley. For years the sign-age was older and misleading with incorrect information. The State Foundation on Culture and Art was ready to renovate the signs. I was chosen to create 12 historical, informative signs. In the initial interview a Hawaiian family, the Kahu, of the area was present. Their families mission was to tell the correct version of the valley and the battle that won Maui. I appreciated this, and worked closely with the Ohana on how the sign-age looked, but how accurate history was told; correctly. To pay homage to both worlds was a great learning lesson, honoring the past and creating signs that would last into the future. To this day those signs are in good shape. They were mounted on cast bronze with colored illustrations, with a coating that insured they would not fade or be defaced and last many years.

Molokai Mural: On Molokai, my home island, I was privileged to work closely with Kumu John Kaimikawa. Kumu held in his mind nine hundred years of Molokai history. Together we could take his knowledge and paint this story of Molokai so it could be immortalized as an interior mural. Again the commission came from The State Foundation on Culture and Art, and I was able to merge the two worlds so that the children of Kaunakakai school will know and appreciate how truly amazing Molokai’s story is! This mural was 3 panels measuring 8 feet by 40 feet in length. I painted this on Maui and shipped canvas to be stretched in Molokai.

3. Waihe’e Land Preserve, just past Waikapu, in ancient times was a thriving community of hundreds in a Hawaiian village was an ahupua’a. Now only tall grasses and stones mark the village site. I was chosen by the Waihe’e board of directors to instal 7 signs that told the story of this area. Again I worked with the ‘Kahu’ and spent hours in extensive research. We created signs that will immortalize this area. To this day schools and the public have excursions that educate and inform the viewer, with a guide, about the history of this area. This area could have been forgotten, if these signs and steps had not been taken. I was enormously proud to play a part in this vision.

The Hilton Hawaiian Village: George Kanahele shared with me the legend of Kalia. He could share this story of Waikiki very few knew.

Ritz Carlton / Ambassadors of the Environment; Cousteau Society: We worked to create a mural with Maui’s most talented high school students. We combined nature hikes and Hawaiian education to complete this mural. The theme again was The Ahupua’a, and Iokepa Naeole was our Kahu.

6. Pomaikai Elementary School (installed 01/11/13) Wailuku, Maui, is the first stone mosaic tile mural done for the public, commissioned again by The State Foundation on Culture and Arts. This mural covers 3 panels and embraces the “Ahupua’a” system (mountain to the sea.) I again conducted extensive research into this area, I was honored to work with the Kahu of this area; Leslie Kuliouou.

About the lesson

Art classes will be held three times weekly. The hour is from (week) 4-5 and Saturdays from 10-12.

During this time each student will be guided on an exploration of art from the perspective of Hawaiian, Japanese, Filipino Chinese implements (poi pounders and other cultural elements) that are of stone, wood or canvas.
