About Mary

Parenting is HARD WORK! And it becomes even harder if we scroll through Instagram or Facebook and see other families making it look easy. The reality is that it is not easy. But! You can learn a few easy tips and tools that actually make it easier...

The key is baby steps. Make tiny changes slowly, but steadily and don’t go backwards. Your toddler learned to walk, so she never crawled again. You will learn some new patterns of interaction, so you will never use the old patterns again.

Also important is having a guide. There is WAY too much conflicting information about how to raise children. The number of parenting books, blogs, websites is truly insane and just makes new parents even more insecure and confused.

I will be your guide. I currently teach full-time in the Child Development program at a community college – I’ve been preparing early childhood educators for over 10 years. I’m also a former teacher, childbirth educator, and doula. I love combining my scientific knowledge about how children develop with my practical knowledge of the realities and challenges of parenting.

I earned my M.Ed. in Early and Elementary Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and I am a Certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator. And I have successfully raised a teenage son without killing him, his father, or myself!

I love watching the transformation of relationships between parents and their children. I love when parents come back to me and say "This works! It's so much easier" or "I'm laughing with my kids again."

I was originally a student at the University of Miami, FL, studying Marine Biology. For one academic school year, I volunteered as a reading tutor for two 5th grade students who were reading at a kindergarten level. At the end of the year, my students were reading at a 7th grade level and, even more importantly, they both transformed socially and emotionally. At the beginning of the year, they were withdrawn and depressed. By the end of the year, they were joyful and confident and completely different children. Once I had witnessed the transformative power of teaching, I was hooked and changed my major.

I have a M.Ed. in Early and Elementary Education from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. I am a Certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator. I am a full-time community college professor, and have been preparing teachers to work in Early Childhood Education (birth - PK) for the past 10 years.

About the lesson

Since my parenting classes are one-on-one, each class is tailored to your family’s specific needs and/or concerns. Prior to the first class, parents fill out a questionnaire designed to help me learn more about your family’s specific needs, interests, and/or concerns. The questionnaire also will provide me with information about your preferred learning style. The goal is for me to provide you with relevant information and techniques packaged up in a teaching style that supports the unique way you learn best.

I have worked with adult learners of all ages, cultures, and educational backgrounds. I have taught the following parent education classes: infant/toddler swim classes, childbirth, positive discipline, healthy eating with children, children and divorce. I am comfortable and confident working with parent partners and/or individual parents.

Parenting is about a relationship; a loving and respectful relationship. Find a teacher who can model this for you. You should feel that your teacher makes an effort to get to know you as a student and as an individual. And, you should feel that your teacher truly likes and respects you. Finally, you want a teacher who knows the science of child development and brain development and knows how to translate this knowledge into practice.
