About Steven

I have a masters of fine arts degree in photography. I love teaching and photography is my passion. I conduct my classes over Facebook Live, so you get a one on one teaching experience witout either of us having to leave home. I am able to teach about all aspects of photography from the very basics to advanced skills. We can take it as far as you want!

I love photography, it has been a passion of mine ever since I picked up my first camera when I was 12 years old. I love how the camera can be a tool to show what you find interesting in the world while at the same time exploring the creative possibilities of the medium. It gives me great pride to pass this knowledge along to future artists, knowing that I will have a part in shaping their visions.

I began teaching a class at the Springfield Regional Arts Council in 2013. One of my students was a teacher in the art department at Ozark Technical College. In 2015 the chair of the art department at Southwest Baptist University contacted several schools in the area looking for a photography instructor, my student recommended me and I have been teaching there part time since August 2015.

I have a master of fine arts degree in photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design.

I have also work for several photography studios and labs in the past.

About the lesson

I teach online classes on Thursday mornings. Initially we cancorrespond to find out your existing level of knowledge of photography, your goals for the class and any concerns and questions that you might have.

I have worked with all types of students, since I work at a university my students are made up of differing ethic and social backgrounds, some are disabled. The one thing all my students have in common is their Christian faith.

Find someone you are comfortable with as a person as much as their crendentials. If you don't like a persons teaching style or cannot get along with their personality, it won't matter if they went to Harvard, you won't be able to get inspired to learn.

Last semester I took my students on a field trip to Ritter Springs Park, which is just north of Springfield, MO. I love it when I can get students out of the classroom to show how to use the camera in a practical sense so that they can get a feel for what it is like to produce images. Real world experience is so much better than lectures about the concepts. I like to think that the online class will give a lot of that experience since I will be streaming live as I do demonstrations outdoors (weather permitting).

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
-What kind of camera and lens will I need for my skill level?
