About John

I come from the commercial professional side of the photography business.

I have been a photographer/creative director in the advertising industry for the past 32 years. My expertise is developing a “look” and a style to connect people to products. Great photography is two things. Storytelling and creating emotion in a photograph. This is true for any kind of photograph. I teach students from beginners to advanced how to take exceptional pictures!

I cover everything from what the buttons and dials do to how to compose and frame a shot I teach BOTH how to use a camera and how to create an emotional image.

You will learn the secrets of how professional, successful commercial photographers think and work and most importantly how to apply this real-life experience to your photographic journey regardless if you are a beginner or an advanced hobbyist.

I love helping photographers become better and more knowledgeable in how to take great pictures. I teach in such a way to encourage my students to ask questions. I take the time to make sure that you understand what the dials do, shutter speed, aperture, ISO and how they all work together. see (concealed information) my classes section.

I have always been a teacher. As a creative director, you teach art directors what to look for and how to create persuasive advertising images. As an artist, I teach aesthetics. The what makes a good picture. Photography students need to understand composition, light, and shadow. I started teaching 30 years ago.

I studied my craft from the best. I learned from the best. I have been an artist my whole life. Coming from the commercial side with 32 years of storytelling, where you have to communicate an idea or concept to persuade someone to buy something is a very different skill set than just picking up a camera, really loving it and proclaiming to the world that you are a photographer. I wish it was that easy...

About the lesson

We have a conversation, discuss what it is you want to learn? Where are you in your skill level and we tailor-make a series of lessons to radically improve your technique and understanding of the subject matter you are interested in.

Anyone who tells you that you can learn photography in just one or two lessons, say goodbye! There is a lot to it. With my experience, I know how to get you on the fast track and teach you what you really need to know to get you up to speed to start taking better pictures!

Everything from beginners that literally know nothing about photography to seasoned professionals developing a portfolio to solicit business.

I would check their background. Ask a potential teacher: Where did you learn your craft? Do you do this full time? How long have you been a professional paid photographer? Did you go to school and major in art? Do you understand the importance of studying painting and fine art and art history and how that relates to photographic composition? Do you know who some of the most respected an acknowledged professional photographer are? Sadly, there are a lot of "want to be photographer" teachers out there. If they fumble around with any of these answers be suspicious… Think twice.

I was on set and was directing a shoot and it worked out great! The client had a great experience! We got some great images that they can be proud of and show their friends. A good photo shoot is a wonderful thing!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If you are a beginner say so. It is not helpful to say that you are better than you really are. If you have a specific topic or area that you want clarification on or want to learn more about communicate this. As an example, I want to learn more about lighting? Ok, for what? People? Landscapes? indoor photography? working with flash? outdoor photography? All of these are different kinds of lighting situations and have specific things that you need to know about. If you want an overview about lighting say something like can you tell me about the different kinds of light and how do you control light?

The DSLR camera in manual mode can be confusing. He really listened to what my questions were about and would answer in a way I could understand. He is the first professional photographer that spent time with me to make sure I understood each step of the manual mode. He not only teaches you all the nuances of your camera, but he teaches art. As in what what is the difference between a good or great shot and why. John teaches a craft, not just taking pictures.

My typical classes are 4 lessons for $200.00 -- $50.00 each Beginning classes last about an hour plus questions and answers. I teach the important fundamentals of photography to beginners. Shutter Speed, Aperture, and ISO where they are on your camera what they do and how they work together.

For intermediate students, I develop a custom series of lessons to cover what it is that they want to learn. Examples of this would be how to shoot wildlife, people, studio portraits, travel, black and white, and photoshop skills.
