About Steve

Photography should be rewarding, and fun at times!

I make understanding photography easy & usable from basics to advanced.

Photography starts in your head , not your hands. The appropriate tools belong in your hands, but the skills and techniques need to go through your preferences, talents, and interests.

Been teaching & training photographers since 1974. Fundamentals and advanced, personal or professional. I offer one on one instruction, group classes , and on location consults or training. Photography is more than just taking pictures. It's more about connecting with your subjects- People, pets, activities, scenery, natures beauty, business, industry, achitecture, wildlife, sports, social events, and much more. Then, revisit & enjoy, or share your connections with others through your photos. I enjoy helping people "get it " and grow. Also, helping others helps keep my skills sharper.

Couldn't find good inexpensive instruction but saw a great need! Trained photographers in several studios, and continue to work as an active photographer and teacher.

Took over West Des Moines adult Ed photography program approximately 1992; 2x / yr to present. Have taught over 1600 students in last 25 years alone.

I think some of it is just my nature.

My first photograph was about 60 years ago, personal experiences, family photography business, studio portraiture, running several portrait studios & teams plus commercial studio. Running a photo retail store for 42 years also makes me familiar with the issues people have, and clearly understand the best solutions to offer.

I help people with or without prior instruction in photography, and many newcomers with just the passion, talent, and the motivation to learn.

About the lesson

First 20 minutes I assess what you have, in equipment, experience, and prior instruction: where you are in skills, techniques, and abilities: and where you want to be in proficiencies and personal interests. Consider time availability, budget, and pace.

Some may only need a refresher or "check up" on skills or techniques; others may only need specific tips or recipes for limited tasks; and some want to start the ongoing path of a full understanding of photography.

Kids to seniors, beginners to pros, hobbyists and more serious.

All types as long as interested in learning !
