About James

Private music instruction has been my full-time job for more than a decade. I am also an arranger for Hal Leonard! I play piano, trombone, and euphonium, and I also teach music theory and composition.

I love sharing my passion for music, and I love learning and growing alongside my students. I strive every day to be more like my musical idol, Leonard Bernstein.

I joined the band in middle school and rented my first instrument from Sadler Music in Kennesaw, Georgia. Years later Robyn Sadler, the store owner, suggested that I consider teaching piano. I did, and the rest is history!

Since childhood I have received private and group instruction in music and have been involved in a great variety of projects and performances. I attended (but did not graduate from) the School of Music at Kennesaw State University.

About the lesson

I begin by asking each new student what their previous musical experience is and what their goals are. From there we cover basics that will be relevant no matter what we plan to tackle in the future. After a few lessons we really get into a groove. At that point I can recommend a book, if necessary.

I have worked with beginners as well as experienced players. I have worked with students from 3 years of age to 76 yers of age.

Recently I submitted the final draft of a new book for Hal Leonard, Fingerpower Pop Level 2.

I joined a salsa band (on trombone) and had my first rehearsal with them.

I also attended my first Dragon Con and saw the Georgia Philharmonic Orchestra perform an excellent program of themes from movies and television.
