About Alexander

Having started piano lessons at age four, Alexander draws on varied experiences as an accompanist and soloist as well as a long study of jazz, western classical, the Taubman Approach and the Alexander Technique to nurture students’ artistry, technique and musical knowledge. His priorities as a teacher are to help each student achieve their goals, cultivate a greater appreciation of music, and bring joy to themselves and others through piano playing.

Alexander holds a B.A. in jazz studies from Temple University where he worked closely with jazz luminaries including Bruce Barth, Tom Lawton, John Swana and Joe Magnarelli. Since leaving Philadelphia in 2019 he has formally studied the Taubman Approach, the Alexander Technique and the Suzuki Method as well as provided qualitative and harmonic analyses for researchers at the Pennsylvania State University. He currently maintains a private piano studio in Boston, MA, where he is enrolled in a three year Alexander Technique teacher training course.

I've been teaching ever since high school, when I was appointed musical director of one of our school's dramatic productions. That same year, I collaborated with another student on writing a musical, for which I penned the music. I had to teach everyone the music I wrote! I started teaching piano shortly after that, and haven't looked back.

About the lesson

Each student requires a slightly different curriculum. I base my approach on each student's goals, musical tastes, and the areas of their musical development which demand the most attention.

My students have ranged from very young to elderly--my oldest student was 67 when he started lessons! Almost everyone has different goals associated with piano playing, and I enjoy helping students realize them.

A teacher should have experience as a performer, and should have ample understanding and appreciation of the extra-pianistic considerations that are so important in playing an instrument: awareness and control of the breath, an understanding (even an intuitive one) of music theory, and an infectious love for music.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The student should think about their goals (it's OK if they're half-formed); what they expect or desire a teacher to do for them; what their main difficulties with playing are, and how best to word questions about them; and what most interests them about playing and practicing, so they may point the teacher in the right direction when it comes to designing an engaging curriculum.

My base rate is $55/hr. I charge a little extra for house calls, depending on how far I have to travel.
