About Shelby

Learning a new instrument can be frustrating, especially when you feel you aren't achieving your goals. Fortunately, there is more than one way to learn music! I offer personalized lessons in voice and piano, completely catered to the student's goals. Make learning music fun for you!

Here’s a little more background on me! I am a third year Music major at Spelman College, where I have trained in voice, piano, and composition. I currently hold the title of Student Conductor with the Spelman College Glee Club. In this position, I work everyday to help students reach their potential as musicians. I am an All-State vocalist, and have studied music theory and vocal pedagogy extensively. I have also worked as a church pianist, and have accompanied numerous pop soloists both at Spelman and during my high school career. I have played music of every genre, and I am so excited to pass on what I know!

I started teaching as a peer tutor in Music Theory, then progressed as a Student Conductor of the Spelman College Glee Club.

I currently attend Spelman College, where I am a Vocal Performance Major and Piano Performance Minor. During my time at Spelman, I have competed in many collegiate vocal masterclasses and competitions. In addition, I am the accompanist for Sister's Chapel at Spelman College, and serve as a private accompanist for some student performances. I am a Classically trained singer and pianist, but have studied and performed in many genres, including jazz, R&B, gospel, and popular music.

About the lesson

My first step in working with a new student is to ask them about their goals and how they like to learn. Of course, you would teach a visual learner differently than an auditory learner! We start off by learning the basics of reading music through exercises and short songs, then progress into more advanced techniques.

I have mostly worked with beginner and intermediate students, both adults and children.
