About Carly
I approach teaching without using a standard outside method for the majority of my students, so that both the student and I are free to explore and address their needs without boxing them in, holding them back, or making them feel "measured." Each of my students are placed in a theory and a technique book, but all other concepts are taught through direct contact with age and level appropriate repertoire.
While I am rigorous in my approach and insist that each of my students get a firm foundation in classic theory, sight reading, and technique; I also highly encourage my students to tell me the music that they want to be able to play so that we can use that music to learn, rather than simply learn to play the music. If a student is struggling to embrace a concept or learn a song, I create or seek out materials to help them overcome that specific challenge. If a student wants to play a pop, rock, or jazz song, I find or create a level appropriate arrangement for them, or I help them learn to play it by ear. I also teach them how to play along with the original tracks as if they were "in the band." That said, I also push the boundaries of their taste and comfort in an effort to expand their awareness of musical styles, and possibly help them discover something they didn't know they would love.
Overall, the biggest perk I come with as a teacher is my versatility. If the student wants to learn to become a classical pianist, I can teach to that. If the student wants to play in a pop, rock, worship, or jazz band, I can teach to that. If the student likes musical theater and accompaniment, I can do that as well. I pride myself on focusing on each of my students as individuals, and helping them learn through a process of exploration.
My favorite thing about what I do is sharing the joy of music with others, and watching people of all ages and from all walks of life grow musically. I love watching students absorb, embrace, and implement new musical concepts!
I began teaching after my jazz mentor urged me to. He thought that I would make an excellent teacher, and I'm glad he did, because I fell in love!
I have been studying the piano for 19 years, and have taken under under several notable teachers and mentors. I am a working professional musician, and use my skills as a performing pianist in multiple capacities several times per month. I am classically trained, however, I have geared my focus towards Jazz and R&B in the last few years, and I am the pianist for several local Jazz and R&B bands.

Upon beginning lessons with a new student, I typically spend 2-4 weeks focusing on basic theory, technic, and improvisation before deciding what materials to place the student in; or deciding on a trajectory.
The first several lessons with a beginner student are centered around familiarty with musical terms and signs, familiarity with keybaord geography, listening exercises, creativity, gaining command over proper use of the hands, and rythm activities.
The first several lessons with a student who has experience are focused around revieiwing and exploring past repertiore, reviewing theory and scales, exploring improvisation, and exploring their technical development. During this time the student and I decide what direction they would like to go in, and what sorts of things they would like to work on.
I have worked with many types of students. I have a thriving studio of over 40 students. My youngest is 3, and my oldest is 68. I have a bit of successful experience working with autistic and ADHD students as well.
Look for a teacher who is an active performer. Performance keeps a teacher fresh, constantly challenged, and hip to changing styles and local prefereces. Also be sure that a teacher is able to implement creativity and personalization into their lessons. Select a teacher that teaches to the student, rather than who attempts to mold their student to the materials.

Details
I charge $20 for a 20 minute preschool lesson, $25 for a standard 30 minute lesson, and $45 for an hour lesson. Lessons are weekly.
