About Yvonne

My passion is playing piano and I am very actively performing as well as teaching. This gives me a double enthusiasm for the instrument. I love children and young adults and have a ten year old boy (grandson) living with me. I teach 5th grade boys at Central Kids and taught in West Ottawa (elementary music and Physical wellness) for 25 years.

Getting to know children, seeing them react to their own progress, and knowing that they are learning a life long skill.

People asked me for lessons. I have never had to advertise.

I am an active teacher providing recitals, small group classes, and performances in piano clubs for students. In the spring of 2021 i will finish my coursework at GVU and earn national accreditation from the Music Teachers National Association. I love playing piano and play at Fellowship Reformed Church. My education and experience includes the following: I have B.A. in Music from Hope COllege in Holland Michgan, I taught elementary music in Holland Public, Zeeland Public, and more recently in West Ottawa where I retired in 2011. I have taught privately for a total of 10 years.

About the lesson

I begin with questions about the student's day, any news from the week or special events coming up. Then we warm up with technical studies, scales, chords, cadences, etc. Theory is next with written work, sight reading, composing, or improvising. Then come the pieces for the week, some being used for playing with music and others to memorize. We may close with a Christmas song, poplular song, or show tune....maybe not, just depending on their level.

Kindergarten through adult and one blind student.

Interview the person first. Ask for the names of some of her students that you may speak to or listen to them play piano.

Piano Club at Hope College where four of my students performed for children and adults in the Holland area in Jack Miller Auditorium. My blind student also played.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Are they willing to practice a minimum of 2 and 1/2 hours per week? Are they willing to put the work and long term committment into becoming a good pianist? Are they willing to take a lesson every week, or otherwise make it up?
