About Ria

Ria Mukund, an Indian lyric coloratura soprano, has been active on the international stage since 2012. Born and raised in a culture of South Indian classical (Carnatic) music, she has been studying Western classical music for the last five years. She has studied under acclaimed mezzo-soprano Diana Tash, and is currently completing her Master's degree in Music (Vocal Performance) at Claremont Graduate University, studying privately with Dr. Carol Lisek.

I first started teaching when I was invited to be a guest lecturer at an advanced jazz class at Los Angeles City College, to hold an Introduction to Indian Classical Music workshop. Following this, I taught a series of workshops in India on voice culture and how actors can use the full potential of their voices. This led to a position at a private music school, where I currently teach children and adolescent singers and pianists.

About the lesson

I hold one sample class, where the student can view my teaching style and I can assess the student's level and interest in music. Once we decide to continue, I then discuss payment methods and studio policy.

I have worked with children and adults on private lessons, and with adults in workshops.

Know your goals. You may not know exactly what you want to learn, what song or piece, but it helps to have a general idea of where you want to be musically.

Recently, I had the privilege of working with the California Philharmonc Chorale in a performance at Walt Disney Concert Hall. It is always exciting to work with new choral conductors to see their different perspectives and methods, and I earn the quite a bit from this teacher about the mental and psychological aspects of singing.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
It's great if the student has thought about what they want from the lessons, the time and effort they're willing to put into their lessons and practice, and what their long-term goals are.

Details

I charge $30 for a half-hour lesson and $45 for an hour's lesson. For travel to a student's home (when possible), there is a surcharge of $5.
