About Emily

Hello! I teach Jazz, Blues, Pop, Funk, Soul, and Classical. Beginner to advanced levels are welcome! I can help you with piano technique, reading music, developing repertoire, playing by ear, arranging, songwriting, and advanced improvisation. I currently play in a band and have a lot of experience with different types of groups -- from chamber ensembles to jam bands to jazz trios. So I can also help you work through your postion playing keys in a band.

A little background on me: I started playing piano at the age of four; though, if you ask my older sister, “playing” is too kind a work. I'm classically trained and have been performing since I was a kid. I studied piano performance and music theory at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro under Dr. John Salmon, avid co-collaborator with the late great Dave Brubeck. I was lucky enough to train both classically and in jazz in college. Since finishing my formal studies, I've focused my music making primarily around improvisation. In my free time, I like to freestyle rap to and about my cats, sing Stevie Wonder songs in the shower, and ask myself what would Jerry García do. As a teacher, I'm most interested in how the musical language can be used as a communication tool and am excited to aid students in exploring what the musical language means to them. I believe music is a very personal journey and that students are their best teachers.

I love helping students find meaningful ways to communicate through their music and use it as an outlet. Whether it's working on improv skills for open mics or writing music so they can start a band or learning songs to play when students get home from work or school to unwind, I really enjoy helping students make music apart of their life. I also enjoy discovering music for myself through students. There's always something new for me to learn, and I feel like I'm constantly evolving my relationship with music as a result of teaching someone else about the musical language!

I started teaching piano when I was a teenager in high school. One of the college professors I was studying with at the time would often send me younger students to learn foundational skills. In college I regularly tutored other music majors in music theory. And I've been teaching on and off since graduating from college.

I've trainied classically on the piano since the age of four. I began seriously studying music theory and composition at the age of ten. I began regularly playing jazz in middle school. I studied piano performance and music theory at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

About the lesson

When I take on a new student, it's most important to me that I know what level their musical ear is at and that we're both using the same language to explain musical concepts. We'll figure out your level of pitch recognition and memory, we'll learn intervals right away, we'll make sure a few central harmonic ideas are clarified, and we'll learn about the piano itself -- how keyboards work, how acoustic pianos work, how to physically play the instrument. My priority for a student's first lesson is that the student, whether child or adult, beginner or advanced, leaves the lesson able to play something fulfilling to them on the piano that they weren't previously able to play. For the first few lessons after that, we'll continue to hone your ear training skills, learn how to read music (or work on reading it more fluently), start diving into harmonic function, and set goals for the music you want to work on and the projects you'd like to take on.

Since college, I've worked with all sorts of students from beginners to gigging musicians working to expand their knowledge of music theory or work on their improvisational skills. I've worked with little kids as young as four and adult students as old as 85. I've had several students with learning disabilities. Regardless of their background, my goal is to always meet a student on their level and just enjoy working on music together.
