About Michael

I teach 1 hour lessons in classical piano, keyboard technique, performance technique, basic classical theory and programming. I have taught for 16 years and am a member of the Music Teachers National Association, Virginia Music Teachers Association, and Richmond Music Teachers Association. I am also a member of the National and Virginia Fedreation of Music Clubs and the Richmond Music Study Club. I provide my students with opportunities to participate in various recitals, competitions, and piano festivals. References and Resume provided upon request.

I retired after 34 years of Govenment service and began teaching in 2001.

Thirteen years of private, college level, and professional study.

About the lesson

I assess their aptitude and level of interest then design a teaching plan specific to that student. For beginning students, I use technical exercises for the student and the Masters Theory method series and the John Thompson Method series. These are then complimented by classical literature.

All types. Ages range from 5 years old to 76 years of age. I have home schooled students, advanced studies high school students, retired and practicing lawyers, and autistic students.

Please understand this! No on can teach a student how to play the piano. Teachers can only show students how to teach themselves to play. I work very hard with and for my students. I expect them to be equally serious about their lessons and to do their best. Depending on the age and level of the students, I expect each to practice 1/2 hour to 1 hour daily. Some of my students (who are heavily into competitions) routinely practice many hours daily. I do everything I can to help my students advance as fast and as far as they can. However, it is the amount of practice, concentration and dedication from the student that ultimately determines his/her success.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
First, ask yourself why "do you want to learn piano". Then ask yourself "how hard are you willing to work to become proficient". These are the first questions I will ask you. Your answers will determine whether or not we proceed. You see, I know the happiness, joy and fulfillment piano can bring into your life and that is what I want to help you obtain.

Details

I charge $50.00 per in-student's-home 1 hour lessons. However, I do not teach to the clock and if a student needs more help and I have the time, I spend as much time with the student as necessary. I make significant discounts for second and/or third students in the same home as long as the lessons are sequential on the same day. I also work with many special needs students and adult students. Depending on the driving distance, I also make discounts for home schooled studends and those taking lessons in the earlier parts of the day. However, I do limit my student load to no more than 10 students and sometimes have waiting lists.
