About Janelle

Hi! I have been teaching piano off and on with a variety of students, kids, adults, etc., for about 40 years. My passion is jazz pedagogy -- how does one learn the hard stuff, especially jazz music theory, and make it easy? I use IRealPro religiously myself, and use it extensively with my students.

I have developed a jazz curriculum -- it works! It's easier than the heady jazz theory books and focuses on learning the repertoire while you learn the technique and theory. I am a devotee of jazz videos on YouTube and I bring the best of what I've learned on those videos into my lessons.

I spent 25 years as a so-so piano player before I got serious about jazz. When I attended jazz weekend workshops and began taking my own advanced jazz piano lessons, I seemed to attract more students who were interested in learning the things I was so excited about.

I have a B.A. in Music Therapy from Augsburg College, and I have been working as a Hospice Music Therapist for 12 years. In my therapy practice and in my teaching, I have discovered the joy of doing something fun is more important than the mastery of huge technical skills. Some of my "students" have become Music Therapy "clients" instead!

About the lesson

I ask a lot of questions! What are the goals, both long and short term, and how does one develop a map for reaching those goals? Then we jump in!

I have worked with all ages of students, and several students with anxiety. I especially enjoy working with adults who are yearning to get back to the music of the Great American Songbook and Jazz Standards.

You should take lessons from several teachers!! And find a group of people to play with so you keep improving and becoming more comfortable.

I had a recent gig on a lake in Wisconsin! 10 piece band, beautiful weather, wonderful audience, watched the sunset. A great experience!

Students should really ask themselves what their goals are for the future. How do you want to play in the upcoming year? Make a roadmap for yourself and you'll get there!

I charge $20 for half hour lessons. If I am coming to your house, I charge $30 for half hour lessons for my travel time.
