About Nicole

Learning is more fun in groups, it just is! As humans we learn best when we can "see, do and teach". We observe, we imitate and then share what we learned. In the Simply Music program we take this approach with learning music. Students learn songs together, collaborate, support and often teach each other.

I've been teaching Simply Music since 2007 and have taken hundreds of students from the basics of piano to playing wonderfully complex classical, blues, and jazz pieces. Along this journey students explore the world of composition and improvisation, applying tools they're learning to create their own pieces.

Watching another person's mind at work is what inspires and fascinates me. Learning how to play music offers an opportunity to stretch our capacity for problem solving, creative expression and trusting the creative impulse. It's a joy to witness this unfold with students of all ages.

I am an Advanced Simply Music Piano Teacher with 37 years of piano experience. Starting my musical journey at the age of 7 and continuing my education through college, I unexpectedly discovered the Simply Music Piano Method in 2007. After years of taking classical lessons and teaching traditional piano lessons, I was impressed by the results that Simply Music students are able to achieve in a very short period of time. I became a Licensed Simply Music Teacher in May of 2007 and opened the Rhythm ‘n You Piano Studio.

Because of Simply Music, my relationship to the piano and my musicianship has expanded into areas I had never tried in my classical training: Blues and Jazz, improvising and composing my own songs and arrangements.

My passion is to give students an experience that redefines who they are and what they believe they’re capable of. And to discover that we are all immensely and creatively musical!

About the lesson

Prospective students attend a Free Introductory Session before they enroll. This gives us a chance to meet in person, for me to I ntroduce you to the studio and the Simply Music method. If, after the 60 minute intro, parents/students feel that we are a good match, students are welcome to enroll.

New students, once enrolled, will be directed to the Simply Music website to purchase their Level 1 materials. Students all begin with the same songs and the pace of the class is determined by the students/parents commitment to at-home practice.

Students are required to practice at least 5 days a week, 10-20 minutes per day.

I've worked with a variety of students from ages 4.5 to 91 years old; students with moderate learning challenges (from high functioning autism to early stages of dementia); my studio has provided lessons for students from the north, south, east and westside of LA, as well as, students from other states (via SKYPE).

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Why do I want to learn the piano?

What are some songs I'd like to be able to play?

If I do not currently have a piano/keyboard, do I have room in my home for an instrument?

Am I willing to carve out 20 minutes a day for regular at-home practice?

Nicole Owenga-Scott is an amazing music teacher. She inspires students to learn to play piano but also to explore music, to love music and to share it with family and friends. Nicole is warm and nurturing but she also maintains high expectations to keep students moving forward in a positive and fulfilling way. Her students gain not only musical acumen but also personal confidence. I highly recommend Nicole Owenga-Scott and Rhythm 'n You Piano Studio.

I was immediately impressed by the Simply Music method because it instills a joy and love of music first, before the student learns to read music. At her first lesson my daughter could play a song and every week after she learned a new song and was encouraged to sing along if there were lyrics. I was also pleased with the composition assignments where they could blend notes or patterns from songs they already know. This really expands it beyond playing set notes - it encourages creativity and the reward of using imagination to come up with something both familiar and original.
My daughter now has a large repertoire of songs she can play ranging in styles from blues to lullabyes. I’m absolutely amazed by her progress!! And Ms. Nicole is absolutely the perfect teacher!! She is experienced, kind, supportive, and keeps the students focused on progress. I couldn’t ask for a better fit for my daughter. I don’t want my daughter to play Carnegie Hall - I want her to develop a love of music and I’m so deeply impressed by how much she’s accomplished in less than two years. I credit the method and Ms Nicole’s dedicated teaching style.
