About Karen

Welcome to the Karen Schmale Online Piano Studio!

I have over 20 years of experience teaching well over 500 students, from ages 3 to 93! Whether you are a newcomer to the piano, or a seasoned veteran, I tailor my program to each individual and their ultimate goals, while helping them discover the enormous amount of joy to be found in studying music! My younger students in Indianapolis at the Meridian Music School, Coralville and Des Moines have competed and performed at the state level, while my college-level students passed piano profiency exams for college credit, and my adult students have been professionals or retirees who always wanted to learn (it's never too late).

Originally from the Chicago area where I grew up in Park Ridge, IL, I completed my Bachelors in Music at Illinois State University (Piano Performance) as well as Graduate Studies with Honors from the world-renowned Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, Bloomington, under the tutelage of concert artist Leonard Hokanson, where my studies over three years included piano performance and pedagogy, choral conducting, classical and vocal jazz, music theory and music history as well as accompanying concert choirs, instrumentalists and singers in Indiana and Illinois. Having competed since the age of seven at the regional and national levels, I won awards throughout my career and performed with the Illinois State University Symphony Orchestra, The Northshore Music Teachers Association, Society of American Musicians, American Pianists Association National Auditions semi-finalist, and performed in recital throughout the Mid-West as well as in Arizona, and as an accompanist for the Metropolitan Opera Auditions at Orchestral Hall's Symphony Center in Chicago.
