About Mikaela

My name is Mikaela, and I am a graduate from Brigham Young University with my Bachelor's degree in Studio Art with Teaching Licensure. I recently received the 2020 Utah Art Education Association Preservice Teacher of the Year Award. I have experience teaching students ages 5 to 45 in elementary schools, high school and junior high schools, college and community workshops.

As an artist and art educator, my goals include 1) giving anyone and everyone the opportunity to interact and connect to art in some way, 2) helping people overcome creative blocks and artistic insecurities, and 3) teaching others how to nurture and/or rediscover their creative confidence. I find the best way to develop creative confidence is through experimentation, discovering your own unique artistic process and style, and connecting with other people through art. These are things I hope to do with each of my students to help them achieve their artistic goals.

When I teach, I make art and explore techniques and materials right alongside my students. I am a believer in process before product, and find that experimenting with art materials and techniques while employing a growth mindset helps to overcome perfectionism, creative block, and artistic fear.

I enjoy drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, and experimenting with all sorts of materials, including (but not limited to) pencil, pen, charcoal, pastels, watercolors, tempera and acrylic paint, ink, and clay! I also have experience with digital drawing and painting and photo editing and design with the Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign. I especially love combining different processes to create mixed media artwork, and stretching the limits of what materials can do.

About the lesson

I will meet with the student the first day and figure out what materials they have and what they still need to get. Then we will discuss the details for lessons going forward and make a plan together based on the student's goals. Finally, we will jump right into making art!
