About Adam

I have BM in Music Composition, have played piano for 14 years, and tuba for 8 years, studying both in my degree. I have played both piano and tuba in solo, accompaniment, small ensemble, and large ensemble settings, providing me with a broad range of experience in music. Although I have specific expertise that applies directly in teaching theory and music composition, it also aids in my passion of helping students truly understand what is happening as they learn to play their instrument as well. From my experience, a strong emphasis in theory alongside technic and repertoire aids students in more quickly and fully absorbing the ability to play their instrument. Music moves past just pushing buttons to play a specific sound and can become an effective mode of communication.

The process of getting to know a student, understanding them, and then working with them so that they specfically progess is a joy to watch. Every day is different and dynamically dependent on the student, so the constant new challenge of how to help a student reach their goals consistently stretches my understanding of how to teach and express music better.

I started in high school exchanging piano for violin lessons with a friend, went on to get a music degree, volunteered at a school assisting the low brass section of the band, then went on to work as a music teacher and freelance musician after graduation.

I have a BM in Music Composition from Christopher Newport University where I studied composition under Christopher Cook, piano under Beth Tomessetti and Jeremy Reger, and tuba under Rodney Martell. I have been playing piano for 14 years and tuba for 8 years in solo, chamber, large ensemble, and accompaniment setting.

About the lesson

The first step is always to get to know the new student a little bit, then find what the experience and goals of the student are. From there, we find the appropriate materials to meet the students needs, introduce them to the student and assess there efficacy, and direction with the materials. Afterwards, it is a process of encouragement and helpful critique to propel the student towards their goals.

I have worked with ages 3 to adults in their sixties, both starting with me and starting with previous experience. For students younger than 5, I am happy to provide lessons, although I would recommend a trial lesson to assess whether they are ready to start. Bear in mind that starting a child young means that concepts introduced are slow and general, providing a basis for future instruction more than anything else. For older students, remember it is never too late to start!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I'd always recommend thinking about what your goals are versus the amount of time you are willing to commit. Learning music is a marathon not a sprint, so letting me know what your goals are and what support I can provide. Your needs will change as your experience changes and consistent communication about what is/has worked or not worked can be crucial to providing the best help that I can.
