About Heidi
I have been teaching elementary age students for over 14 years. My educational background is a BA in Psychology and a Masters in Elementary Education. I am certified in New York and Florida. I have been a classroom teacher and worked with students in small groups and one to one. My most recent experience has been developing a home schooling program for a family in South Florida for the past two school years. We have recently changed to an online teaching format and it occurred to me that there are likely many students that could use additional support as the world adjusts to distance learning.
I have helped students become more motivated learners through improving their self-confidence with tailored instruction and encouragement to reach their potential. My areas of expertise are reading, writing, math and executive functioning. I have extensive experience with accelerated reading growth and with assessing and remediating skills gaps in reading, writing and mathematics. I love to help students find a topic that inspires them and create a project that helps them use their talents to express what they have learned.
Please take a look at my website to learn more about me and my teaching style. (concealed information)
I love that every student is unique in the way they learn and in what interests them. I love to see that light bulb moment when a child understands something for the first time. It is so important to create an environment where they feel safe to take academic risks and are confident in their ability to try something new.
I was workiing in the corporate world and just didn't find it fulfilling. So I went back to school a little later in life to become a teacher. I have always loved working with children and it just made sense to make this transition. I'm so glad that I did because I absolutely love it.
I have several years of experience working with students in elementary school with a variety of needs. I have worked with neurotypical students and those with special needs. I have a Masters in Education and am certified to teach in both New York and Florida. I have extensive experience with writing curriculum so I have a solid understanding of expectations at each grade level for K-4.

I spend some time talking with the parent to get some background information about what their child needs. I can also contact the student's current or former teacher if the parents request it. My first session would be about 15 minutes of a get to know you activity. Then we would do many different short activities so I can see the student's attention span and interests. We would do some math calculations or number indentification and read a short story or work on identifying letters or sounds.
I have worked with typical and above average students in grades K-4. I have extensive experience working with students with special needs as well. I have worked with students with speech impairments, attention deficits, executive functioning deficits, learning disabilities and students on the autism spectrum. My most rewarding experiences have been watching students that have been reluctant readers or writers begin to make growth. I love to help students become confident in their math abilities as well.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I think that speaking with current or former teachers can be very helpful when starting out with a new student. Their insight on what the student needs is invaluable as it will save me time on assessment and allow me to get right to work on closing any academic gaps or simply pick right up where the teacher has left off. I would want to know their reading level, take a look at a writing sample, and would ask some questions about any math processes they may need some extra support with. I would also want to know the child's learning style and what has motivated them to do well in class. I would ask for specific language or prompts that I can use to reinforce what is being done in school or by other staff members working with the child. I would be happy to speak with speech therapists or occupational therapists working with the child if that is applicable.
