About Young Woo

Hello potential students!

My name is Young Woo, and I'm a fourth-year college student at NYU. I was born in Seoul, South Korea, but my family moved to San Diego after my father's work transferred him. After encountering several excellent teachers, I decided on a career path of being an educator. I am actually preparing to be a biology teacher in the New York City area, but would like to use my past experience to help students achieve fluency with their English speaking and writing skills.

While my passion lies in science, I have been interacting with and tutoring Korean international students in English for several years. While I was home throughout high school, my family hosted numerous students from Korea, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent with each student.

As I helped them with English homework and speaking, they showed me parts of Korean life that I never experienced as an American citizen. I would love to have this experience again, as I am always looking to learn more about my country as well.

I am currently a student in the Teaching and Learning Department of NYU Steinhardt. I have also been student-teaching secondary-level students (middle/high school) for two semesters, along with personal tutoring since I was in high school.

About the lesson

Meeting someone new is always a little awkward, so I like to discover your interests and hobbies as a first. That also helps me to create lessons that you find interesting, making the process more efficient for both of us.

Now to business! I typically use questions from past SAT exams, to see where your grammar skill lies. Additionally, a short writing prompt helps me to determine how well you can use grammar to make sentences, and also to see what level of vocabulary you have already.

I would prefer working with students with a Korean background, as this is the area I have the most experience with. This was with students from the ages of 13-18. However, I have also spent a year in a second-grade classroom as an assistant teacher, so I would not mind working with younger students as well.
