About Johnathan

My goal as an educator is to meet the student where they are. I do not think lessons are about showing a student what I know or putting them through a cookie cutter lesson plan. My hope is to help people find or work toward their musical goal.

The best part about teaching is seeing people produce the sound that they have been looking for. We spend so much time watching things that we wish we can do. Moving to actually doing those things yourself is such an awesome journey to help someone along.

I have always had a tendency toward education. In high school I found myself giving lessons and working sports camps. In college I continued on with education as a degree. As I became more involved locally I would get invited to teach band camps in the summer. The drive to teach has continued from schooling to being a section leading in the Nashville Chorus to now teaching locally still.

I studied Classical Saxophone Performance at Michigan State University. I also recieved clarinet and vocal instruction outside of my standard classes.

After studying at Michigan State, I moved to Nashville, TN for 3 years where I performed in various band and vocal groups. I also performed with the Music City Chorus. The Chorus is a mens barbershop group that placed 1st in the summer of 2022 at the National Barbershop Convention.

Having moved back to Michigan, I teach and perform with local high school and young adult band and vocal programs.

About the lesson

The first step to successful lessons is to establish the goal of those lessons. Is there a specific event that you are preparing for? Are you looking to pick up a hobby? Are the lessons to prepare for a career in music or for collegiate asperations?

Once a general direction is established, we can assess your initial ability and start working on adequate technique and performance music.

The last piece is to set a timeline for your goal as well as a reasonable frequency of lessons.

I have worked with a full spectrum of students from beginners to professionals as well as a full range of ages.

The most important thing with finding a new instructor is to make sure your goals and expectations line up. Lessons are hard work. You need to find someone who has the experience and goal set that align with your own in order to stick with it.
