About Joe

Hello! My name is Joe Graziosi and I am a professional saxophonist and private teacher in NYC.

The pursuit of becoming the best musician I can be started at a young age while trying to learn songs from "The Lion King" on my recorder, and the rest is history. I'm pleased to be able to share my knowledge and journey with students of all ages and abilities who also possess the love and passion for music and learning.

My lessons are completely tailor-made to the needs of every unique student. Whether you want to learn how to play your favorite pop songs on the sax, that new incredible sax solo from Chris Potter's latest record, or Milhaud's "Scaramouche", I can help you create a plan and guide you along the way as you discover your own inner artist. Each student will receive a personal lesson plan that balances music they WANT to learn and music they SHOULD learn (dessert vs. vegetables).

I graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor's in Jazz Studies with a Performance emphasis, and have been working consistently as a musician ever since. While working on cruises as both a theater musician and Musical Director, I traveled to 6 continents, met people from over 70 countries, and was lucky enough to meet and perform with amazing talent from all over the globe. Now, I lead 3 different jazz groups around NYC, perform in various bands, and teach music. I try to bring the valuable knowledge learned from all of these experiences into each lesson, knowing that no two people are the same.

I first started teaching private lessons while in high school, a job many of the top chair high school musicians commonly did. I continued teaching saxophone and improvisation lessons through college, but had to take a hiatus when I graduated and left to work on cruise ships. While there, I was really able to catch up on individual practice while performing every single night, thus greatly expanding my level of experience.

- Graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor's in Jazz Studies - Performance, 2010

- Have taught privately for a collective 8 years

- I am a performing professional musician that can bring real world experience to each lesson. If you aren't performing, then you may not know what a student actually needs to know in order to be successful as a musician.

About the lesson

My first lesson with a new student is all about creating a comfortable atmosphere in order to get to know them. Even if I know what I want to teach them, it's more important to hear about what their interests are, if they have any questions that I may be able to answer, and just breaking the ice of a new teacher/student mentorship.

The next step would be to set realistic goals so that we have a definitive target for our lessons. The goals should be a healthy balance of what the student wants and what I think will help them reach that end. This should be put on paper so the student can reference it as often as they need to to stay on track.

I've worked with students who are absolute beginners, students who wanted to understand the more advanced concepts of improv, untradtional older students, and everywhere in between!

Find a teacher that makes you feel that they truly care about you as a person and an artist. If you've found the right person, you will be looking forward to your lessons all week, not dreading them.

Also, find a teacher who performs in public consistenly. They can help you learn what you need to know to be a professional musician (if you ever choose to go down that route), but also be able to recommend you for real life performing experience if you practice and get good enough.

I recently took my fiance to see "Frozen" on Broadway. The production was absolutely spectacular and really captured the Disney magic! I'm friends with one of the reed players in the pit, so it was extra special to hear him play a really great book of music. The acting and songs were superb, but the special effects stole the show, including the incredibly lifelike "Sven the Reindeer". Highly recommended!
