About Tracy

My mother taught me to sew when I was a child, and I have channeled that knowledge into my 30+ career as a professional costume designer. I can guide you to having a basic set of machine and hand sewing skills that will allow you to create some garments and also handle alterations and repairs of existing clothes. My work in the theater has allowed me to develop a set of skills that are very conducive to teaching and guiding. I love all the different fabrics, trims and ornamentatons that make up theatrical costumes and that love stems from my understanding and respect for proper garment making. In the same way that my ability to read music has helped and supported my work in designing musicals, my ability to sew has allowed me a very enjoyable collaborative experience with makers all over the world.

I began teaching in the early 2000's when I was asked to substitute for a colleague taking a leave of absence from Southern Methodist University. My full time teaching position presented itself to me in 2008 when SUNY Purchase asked me to be an adjunct professor. I have been there ever since.

I learned to sew from my mother as a young person, and that led me to pursue being a theatrical costume designer as my profession. I continued to learn about sewing while obtaining my education as a designer, and the knowledge I gathered in that time has fully supported my ability to collaborate on the creation of my designs over the years.

About the lesson

First is a discussion about goals and what each particular student wants to achieve. Then it's about learning what the tools and materials are and starting to get familar with the vocabulary. Each person works at their own pace and absorbs information in their own way, so there is no standard method of teaching something like a craft - we see how it goes and pace ourselves accordingly.

I have taught both undergraduate and graduate students, but am very good with children and teens as well.

Seek out someone who listens to what it is that you want to achieve by learning to sew and who creates a plan specifically for you, to be accomplised at a rate of speed that supports how you learn.

Since my live performance industry is paused during the pandemic, it's been challenging to feel like theater is possible. However, I recently participated in a wonderful virtual production of Meet Me In St. Louis for the Irish Repertory Theater in New York and it restored my faith in my art. All the actors were in different parts of the country, so I had to work with them by seeing what they had in their own wardrobe, and then sending them options to try. Virtual fittings are possible! The show is fantastic and I loved being a part of it.

Why do I want to learn to sew? What are my goals with learning this particular skill?

Am I willing to be patient and careful in learning how to do this craft? Am I onboard with learning something that cannot be rushed or done quickly, but that requires following instructions and aiming for precision and perfection to get beautiful results?
