About Sheri

I learned to sew at the age of 7and have sewn most of my life over the past 50 years. Learning from the best, my Mom, I was taught to sew just as neatly on the inside as the outside, taking pride in what ever I make! I have learned many tips and tricks over the years and taught primarily children ages six and up along with many beginning adults also for several years. I've been very blessed to have had not only domestic machine experience but also industrial machine experience & have worked as a seamstress over the past 2 years part-time, professionally doing alterations for 3 stores. I am passionate about sewing- especially teaching it and love to continue passing it on!

My favorite moment in teaching sewing is watching a beginner's excitement as soon as they step on the foot pedal and learn to make the machine run! Also the amazement of watching a bobbin wind...That is always a favorite first experience! Learning the skill of sewing lasts a lifetime and some of the benefits include creativity, problem solving, following instructions & gaining self esteem! Those qualities go a long way in the life of a child and an adult💕

I Wanted to combine my teaching skills, love of children, & passion for sewing while still caring for my own children & family. It was an opportunity to do what I love with flexible scheduling to help supplement our income.

Many years of personal sewing, bachelor of science teaching degree in English/homemaking, 15 years teaching children and adults beginning/intermediate sewing, three years experience on industrial sewing machine and embroidery machine

About the lesson

Safety is First! For beginning sewers a safety lesson explaining how to use the machine with caution and handling tools such as iron, pins, scissors, etc. First sewing is done on lined paper for practice and repetition. Beginning projects include mostly straight sewing and then additional classes build on skills with curves, corners, etc.

Children ages 6+ and women

Teaching sewing involves much patience while working with people. Learning these skills and sewing fundamentals accurately from the beginning are very important. Starting slowly & neatly is more important than finishing quickly with a "second rate" finished product in the end. Speed will eventually increase the more comfortable and confident you become. Just be creative and have fun in the process!

What am I interested in learning to make? Will I need to bring my own machine or use one that is provided? When looking to buy my own machine what features should I look for? Are supplies provided or do I bring my own?

Details

Semi-private (maximum limit 2) $18-1hour or $24-1&1/2hours

Private $25-1hour or $30-1&1/2 hours

Lessons are usually once a week. I prefer collecting payment MONTHLY but can work with each individual's budget by collecting payment PRIOR (no exceptions) to each lesson if necessary.

All fabrics, patterns/books & notions (thread & embellishments for projects) are purchased separately by the student. Sewing tools and machines are provided for use by teacher. (Purchase of some supplies/fabrics on site may be available) Use of your personal machine on site is possible if prior arrangement & permission with teacher has been made.
