About Scott Haviland

Created with the desire to make the world of firearms and gun safety classes available and accessible to all, 1st Round Academy’s approach to firearms training and education is to provide high-quality training with a focus on friendly and apolitical instruction to attract and educate shooters of all ages, skill levels and backgrounds.

The goal of 1st Round Academy is to provide individuals all the tools and equipment necessary to advance their shooting skills, be it for sport and recreation, competition, or personal defense.

At 1st Round, we love everything about what we do!! There is nothing more satisfying than having a student who is inexperienced, nervous, and uncomfortable when they walk in, leave with a huge smile and a feeling of empowerment at overcoming a fear and experiencing how much fun the world of shooting is.

Someone once said to me, if you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life, so that is what I do.

About the lesson

Students will arrive for the class, which is formatted in a typical classroom-style setup. The classroom portion of the class will run between 3.5 and 5 hours, depending on how many questions students have during the class.

Throughout the course of the class, the primary focus will be on safety and safety procedures with firearms, but we will also cover topics such as cleaning, storage and storage laws, transportation and relevant laws, types of firearms, firearm parts, ammunition, proper grip, proper stance and the basic fundamentals of shooting, in addition to much more.

Students are provided with a pen and paper to take notes on and we welcome students to ask as many questions as possible, both during the class and after, we are always available!

At the end of the class, students will receive the certificate required by the State of Massachusetts to apply for their Unrestricted Class-A LTC (License To Carry).

In addition to the licensing class, we offer and recommend additional live-fire training. A live-fire version of the Basic Safety class is also available for those who are interested, but this is not currently required by law in the State of Massachusetts.

Whether you chose 1st Round Academy or another school, we always recommend continuing to learn and train as much as possible. We have several schools we will happily recommend if you decide to see what other instructors have to offer.

While we specialize in teaching those who have little to no experience with firearms, we have taught students of all walks of life!

At 1st Round Academy, our goal is to offer a warm and welcoming, but most importantly, an apolitical approach to training to make the world of firearms accessible and enjoyable for all.

Train! Train! Train! Train! No matter what the subject, the most important thing in life is to be constantly learning and improving.

Whether with 1st Round Academy or with another school, you cannot learn too much about anything. Get out there and train!

Anything that a student is curious about is a fantastic question! There is no stupid question, especially when dealing with a subject matter that one is not familiar with.

Basic Home Firearms Safety Class - $75 per person

Live-Fire Basic Firearms Safety Class - $150 per person

1 on 1 Live-Fire Range Training - $95 per hour
(2-hour minimum, includes all firearms, ammunition, targets, and range rental fees)
