About Sarah

My process is song based with content built personally for the student while incorporating a modified classical technique giving my students an understanding of their own vocal tone (timbre) and how to mimic others. I lean heavily on vocal health and longevity tools to ensure students know how to protect their voice for a lifetime. I provide instruction, as well as audition and job coaching. By using songs to teach concepts and theory, I am able to keep my students engaged in their passion while also teaching them skills needed for any performance situation.

I enjoy helping my students reach their goals. It brings me such joy to help students become the best vocally that they can be, while using their own influences to help them get there.

My first experience teaching was with a children's choir on a volunteer basis. It happened on a whim when the musical director quit and I was asked to direct the holiday music. Even though it was unexpected it feels like fate now because it sparked my love of teaching.

Look for a teacher who can do as well as teach, but more importantly find someone you are comfortable around. The music industry has so many different flavors of professionals from young songwriters in coffee shops working for tips, to cruise ship crooners, to tribute bands, to super stars. Music teachers are the same way. Don't be afraid to ask for a conversation so you can find the right flavor for you.

This past August in September, I filled in last minute for six total shows for two different bands, one of which I’ve never played with before, but the guitar player was a former student of my performance coaching. Now that students band is the best of the best in Chattanooga. One of the shows I got to play with an adult prom and it was circus theme so I got to dress up like a ringleader.

I started working with Sarah to learn how to do a vocal fry properly and to get my upper range back after not being able to perform certain songs that I used to back in the day. She taught me how to sing and breath correctly - I didn’t realize I had been doing it so wrong. We achieved my goals, plus some! I have more vocal stamina and control in my middle age than I did in my early years. She has great technical knowledge of music, but is personable and knows popular music genres and pop culture about it, which makes her fun to talk to as well. I’ve even gotten her input on some back up vocals for my original music. She’s awesome!

Details

My standard pricing is $45 an hour for standard lessons, and $60 an hour for classical training, but may vary slightly based on the amount of time needed to be spent outside of lessons to work on creating individualized programs.
Working musicians who have at least 6 dates a month on average can inquire about a discount.

**Special pricing of $30 an hour and $20 for a half hour for all new students hurt financially due to the pandemic*** If the inquiry is for your child and money is an issue, please contact me with their vocal needs and a few details about your circumstances and I may be able to offer a sliding scale option. Music has been proven to benefit the young developing mind, so please do not let the financial burden of the pandemic keep you from reaching out to me as it relates to your young performer.
