About Stephen

I am a classically trained Opera Singer with 10 years of professional experience in New York, DC, and internationally.

I have a private voice studio and teach 10+ students either virtually or in person on a weekly basis.

Singing is the most powerful way I can express myself. My heart is genuinely happy whenever I am singing. I want everybody to have the opportunity to experience that which is why I teach.

When I first started singing I taught lessons to friends in order to have a supplementary income. I fell in love with it and will always continue teaching no matter how busy my operatic schedule is.

I have been singing in professional opera houses for the past decade.

-MM Classical Voice, Manhattan School of Music, Class of 2014

-BA Classical Voice, Montana State University, Class of 2012

About the lesson

I get to know all my students and I gather information about how best to interact with each individual student. I start every lesson with simple vocal warm ups to see where the student is at with their voice and their musical technique. I adjust my teaching style according to the experience level of each student and give the student songs that appropriately match their experience.

I work with with students who are singing in regional theaters and students who prefer just to sing in their shower and want to have an hour of structured practice time!

I typically teach adults but am flexible

Outline what you wish to accomplish so you and your teacher are on the same page. Make sure you feel comfortable with your teacher, and be honest with your teacher. If something feels wrong vocally, speak up! We are also very receptive to feedback and we understand every individual learns in a different way.

Stephen is super personable and great to work with! He is patient, clear in his instruction, and is able to give clear, understandable feedback. He did a fantastic job of switching to online lessons during the Covid-19 crisis, and his lesson quality didn't decrease at all. I would absolutely recommend Stephen Steffens Voice Studio to singers of all abilities.

Besides being probably the easiest person on the planet to get along with, Stephen is incredibly knowledgeable in vocal performance--classical, musical theater as well as pop and other styles. He truly takes the time to understand his students and their individual needs. Stephen really brought out the best in my voice and I'm confident he will do the same for others!!
