About Katie
I began tutoring native Spanish-speaking students in high school, using Spanish to help them with their class homework and using English as ESL support. Forming connections with students and watching them understand new content filled me with joy, so I continued from there.
I have a Bachelor's in political science and a minor in Spanish. I have spent time in language immersion in Mexico and Chile, and have experience with ESL tutoring. I was very involved with the John C Culver Center for Public Policy, which spearheads Simpson College's nationally acclaimed voter turnout rates.

During the initial session, I talk to the student about their goals, needs, and understanding level. Separately, I talk to the student's parent/guardian/adult about their goals for their student's learning. After this session, the student decides if I will be a good match to work with them. I then schedule sessions as needed or desired, working with input from the student and their adult. The student and I will work together to find how the subject engages or relates to them, and we will use that momentum to explore the material at hand.
Primarily high school students.
Find someone with whom you feel comfortable working. You need to be able to say when you do and do not understand because tutoring is about you. Your tutor needs to have passion about whatever they are teaching and have passion about your education.
I recently hiked around rural mountain areas in Colorado.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What does the student need? What is the best outcome of the situation? What is the student's ideal solution? Why might the teacher be doing things in the way that they are? What can the student do to either adapt to how the teacher is leading or what compromises are they willing to make with the teacher?
