About Alan

Spanish:

-Bachelors of Arts in Spanish from College of Charleston (2011)

-10+ years tutoring experience

-We will go beyond the textbook. Languages are not learned in the classroom and/or limited to grammar-based approaches. In fact, research shows the trying to understand, grammar too deeply or memorize long vocabulary lists of translations it's actually more likely to create anxiety and mental block when it's time to use the language. Let me show you a better way!

-Dedicated to providing my students with modern, engaging resources to not only master the topics covered needed to excel in the classroom, but learn the language on their own using real-world content to make the learning process come to life from day one.

ESL:

-Native English speaker with four years of experience, teaching English online, both professionally and as a part of language exchange.

-As I approach a natively command of the Spanish language, I know what it takes to learn a foreign language. Let me help you find the way!

-A personalized approach with engaging resources that will help you progress to where you want to be, regardless of your current level and interests.

-I'm not just here to teach you the grammar, vocabulary, or topics that interest me. The most important thing that I can and will do for you is help you learn how to learn the English language. I can't wait to work together on that!

By accident. In both high school and college, I repeatedly found myself able to explain complex topics to peers in a clear way that made previously complicated Spanish understandable to them.

In the years since, I have simply expanded my teaching service to students in the general public that wish to improve their Spanish.

I graduated from the College of Charleston in 2011 with a bachelors degree in Spanish. Additionally, I have a good track record of helping students not only pass their classes, but improve their Spanish significantly.

About the lesson

The first thing that I like to do is assess what the student already knows and to determine what their goals are moving forward. By asking a few questions and learning about a student's background, and completing a few exercises, I can weakly learn how best to help each student.

I've worked with a variety of students. From those in structured middle, high school, and college courses. In addition, I worked with a Toyota employee who had recently found out that he would be relocating to a new office in Mexico.

I think it is very important to work with a teacher that is both passionate about the language and also understands your needs. Also, someone who cannot only point out your mistakes but clearly explain and help you correct them. It is not enough for a teacher to be able to speak Spanish, but also to have a good enough command of the associated grammar to be able to explain the rules in a clear, concise, and tangible way. I am confident that I can provide that for you.

This past semester I worked with the student who was afraid that she would not graduate college on time without passing the last of her required Spanish courses. Since she had transferred schools, it had been several semesters since she had taken a Spanish course, and despite her success in earlier semesters, she had forgotten most of what she once knew. From the beginning of the semester, I helped her reconnect with the information that she had lost and be successful enough in her final semester of Spanish to achieve an A in the class..

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The most important questions a student can answer are:

1."What are my goals?" (i.e. "master the subjunctive," "pass my class with an 'A', or "Start learning from the very beginning.")

2."How long do I have?"

3. "What has (or hasn't) helped me meet my learning goals in the past?"

Perfect! Alan has been tutoring my daughter for the past year in high school Spanish 4. To highlight our experience, Alan is: patient, identified concepts that were not understood in prior years and retaught, focused on current curriculum to help prepare for exams, and most importantly Alan made learning enjoyable. My daughter was able to schedule directly with Alan and the two of them worked through the entire year together. If we ever need help with Spanish in college, we would hire Alan again without hesitation.

I’ve known Alan for many years now. We met on a language exchange website. When we met, he was supposed to be continuing to improve his Spanish, but he actually speaks it better than I do, and I'm Spanish! He has an incredible vocabulary and uses plenty of local Spanish slang.
He is an exceptionally patient and calm person. He loves teaching… it’s truly his calling, and it shows. He brings so much passion to everything he does.
He adapts to any level, and he has helped me immensely. You won't find a better teacher than him!

As Alan's native friend from Spain, I can say he has an extraordinary command of Spanish. It is impressive how he can manage to have colloquial conversations using slang and switch to intellectual topics with a great use of grammar and perfect pronunciation. I'm sure he has a lot to offer as a teacher, having learned the language himself from scratch.
