About Greta

Statistics is sometimes intimidating but doesn't need to be. I taught statistics to public health students at the University of Pennsylvania for 3 years. It was a required course and not all my students were happy to be there. Some had not taken a math class in years, but they all learned a lot and passed.

I am a PhD epidemiologist and have used statistics extensively in my work. I also know SPSS and Stata well.

My favorite parts of teaching are figuring out how to explain statistial concepts simply and working one on one with students.

In my job at the University of Pennsylvania, I often worked with students on projects that required statistics. Later, when I wanted to get involved with the public health program at Penn, I began teaching the required statistics course. I enjoyed that, especially finding simpler ways to explain concepts and working with students one-on-one or in small groups. It's very rewarding to see students 'getting it.'

I have a PhD in epidemiology and have used statistics in my work for many years. I taught the required statistics course in the Master's of Public Health program at the University of Pennsylvania about 6 times in a three-year period.

About the lesson

The student and I first discuss what course he/she is taking, what the course covers, and what he/she is having difficulty with. We also discuss how often the student is interested in meeting and for how long. The discussion of meeting particulars is just to get an idea and, of course, can be changed.

College students and Master's in Public Health students

Talk to the teacher about the course you are taking and what the syllabus says will be covered. Or if you're not taking a course, discuss what you would like to learn. Tell the teacher how far into the course you are and what you understand and what has given you difficulty. If you get a sense that the teacher and you would communicate well, schedule a first appointment to see if it seems like a good fit. If it does, great - you've found yourself a teacher. If not, try again. It's worth finding someone you work well with.

I recently went to a meetup where people were introduced to dragonboating. It was great to be on the river and see the world from a different vantage point.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
When do you want to meet with the teacher in relation to the course? For example, do you want to meet soon after the class meets, to help you do the homework, or after you've had a chance to try the homework?

Are you interested in learning a statistical package such as Stata in addition to statistics itself?
