About Harvey

Tennis – A Living History I began my tennis career at a very early age when many of the tennis racquets were still made from wood and aluminum. These were the days before video games and many young people still played outside. As my brother and I left the house to play basketball with our neighborhood friends my parents always encouraged us to, also, take our tennis racquets. So, after we played basketball for hours; we then had our equipment, time, and energy ready for some rousing tennis. This participation with tennis began in Edison, NJ and became a valuable skill for socializing, exercise, competition, and a career. I left the schools of Edison, NJ for preparatory school in Princeton, NJ. Tennis was a valuable tool in this environment because it gave an additional means for me and my new friends to socialize, compete, and have fun. The more modern tennis racquet designs and materials were being more widely introduced at this time and I was able to see their benefit, as well as, the benefit of tennis instruction and a training regimen. Whilst at Princeton Day School, from junior high through high school, I was able to compete against and with some of the best tennis talent in NJ. However, even at a young age, I was always somewhat of an envoy of the game and participated, also, with some of my less tennis oriented peers. Tennis participation continued to be a valuable resource while at Williams College. I participated with some very talented players from all over the country. Tennis – A Living History (p.2) Also, I continued to participate with some very talented female players of note. After Williams, my participation with tennis continued in Plainfield, NJ. Plainfield is not a huge town, however, there is a very robust tennis community. In Plainfield, one can find active tennis from daybreak through nightfall, on either hard or clay surfaces. So, I not only worked out but trained for more competitive team, tournament, and satellite tennis in places like Binghamton, NY, the Bronx, and Princeton University. Tennis in Plainfield is, also, very social and people would come, for the weekend, from various states like Maryland to play tennis all day and enjoy concerts in the evening breeze. During the colder months indoor courts provide a tennis refuge for participation, teaching, and training. However, 45 degree and above weather gets the outdoor season heated up. The beautiful thing about tennis in Arizona is that tennis can have a year round outdoor schedule. I settled in the Valley in ’09 and have had wonderful tennis experiences since that time and previous to that time, as well, while visiting. I have worked out, trained, and mentored with various Junior College programs such as, Paradise Valley, Glendale, and Scottsdale. This has allowed me to have playing partners with members of these schools, as well as, ASU and Grand Canyon. Tennis in the Phoenix area and in Tuscon has provided a great many fun, competitive, and athletic opportunities on the college level, at tennis centers, at tennis clubs, at resorts, and at country clubs. Tennis – A Living History (p.3) Whereas, my tennis teaching career did not begin with my certification it has been an invaluable asset and resource already. I have always been a tennis envoy since my younger years of participation, however, I began more formalized teaching, hitting, and coaching at the Donald Van Blake tennis center in Plainfield, NJ. The tennis center is named after a mentor in the tennis community and high school coach whose bust is there also present. He referred to me as the one that got away because my high school tennis years were spent in Princeton, NJ. At the tennis center, I served as a tennis pro and hitting coach for individuals as well as a very talented women’s 4.0 team. I worked with some very talented adults and juniors as young as 9 years of age. In NJ, I was, also, able to work with some very talented albeit inexperienced young tennis players in New Brunswick. I worked with second and third graders in 3 different area schools as a coach. This was a valuable opportunity to promote and teach beginner tennis with an array of teaching aides designed to help young beginners. I did this in affiliation with Sports for Life Inc! Tennis certification has helped me to fine tune and become more consciously aware of certain aspects of my tennis game as well as taught me how to teach anyone how to play tennis. This benefits me as an envoy of the game, as a teacher of the game, and as a participant. I am available for private and semi-private group lessons. Thank You Very Much, Coach Harvey
