About Jackson

Jackson A. Waters is a concert composer and trumpet player who was recently deemed the next “Rising Star” by VoyageLA Magazine. At 16, he was selected to be the youngest composer-in-residence at the 2018 Oregon Bach Festival, where the Festival premiered his first work involving a string quartet and piano. Months later, Jackson was commissioned by the Areté Vocal Ensemble to write a choral work in memory of the lives affected and lost during the Woolsey Fire that struck Southern California in 2018. By the time he entered his first semester at New York University, Jackson had earned commissions and performance opportunities from conservatories, professional ensembles, and dance companies.

As a bi-racial composer, Jackson's latest accomplishment is his debut orchestral symphony, which focuses on rejuvenating Black American history and culture, with an aim to surface previously unrepresented stories and racial injustices. His impressive orchestration skills have earned him recognition from The Colburn School, NYU Orchestra 1, American Composers Orchestra, and the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra’s Emerging Composers Competition at just 21 years old.

As a classical and studio trumpet player in New York, Jackson has performed with the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra and frequently plays in recording sessions for other artists.

Jackson recently came back from the Czech Republic working on his debut album, where he recorded his trumpet playing in the 13th century old St. Nicholas Church as well as recording a professional string trio in Prague for his debut album coming out later this year. In preparation for the album, Jackson recently released his debut single for solo piano titled "NoMad."

While pursuing all of this, Waters is studying music theory and composition at New York University. His past private instructors and mentors include Justin Dello Joio, Shelley Washington, and Michael Gordon, and he is currently working with Beata Hlavenková while participating in the Czech Republic.

I started teaching as a volunteer counselor for a local summer music camp. I worked with student ensembles and gave brass and composition lessons before teaching privately.

I am an award winning concert and film composer studying at New York University. I have experience composing for concert orchestras, choirs, films, and dance. I have performed trumpet with the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra and for many musical theatre productions showcasing works such as In the Heights, Les Mis, Bye Bye Birdie, Into the Woods, Legally Blonde, and more.

About the lesson

My process is discussing with the new student on what they want to achieve with a teacher. What are their goals within a month, 6 months, and within a year. With this, I can create a personal plan to make sure push and help them achieve their goals.

I have taught trumpet and composition lessons with students from around 10 to 20 years old, from just picking up their craft to tutoring my peers.

It's about the connection you personally have with your teacher. The most important things I have learned have not been with the most credited instructors, but the teachers who put it effort and care to see me prosper in my fields.

I had the privilege of connecting with composer and musician Beata Hlavenková during my time in Prague. Each time I worked with her, she left me feeling more inspired to keep working on my projects. Beata went above and beyond what any other mentor would typically do to bring my ideas to life. Earlier this month, I had the incredible opportunity to record my trumpet playing inside St. Nicholas's Church in Old Town Square for my upcoming album. It was an experience I never thought could happen. I finally felt like a part of Prague, no longer an outsider looking in. Playing the trumpet in a church with architecture, art, and history dating back to the 13th century gave my work a whole new dimension, and it deepened my goals as a composer and musician.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How much care and thought the teacher puts into your work and goals.
