About Eliseo

My name is Eliseo Morales and I am a music educator of 25 years. Graduated from Texas A&I Kingsville-Bachelor of Music in 1990. With great success and accolades, I have taught marching band, concert band, jazz and mariachi in the Texas Valley at McAllen and rural/urban communities throughout the South Texas area including Laredo to grades mostly ranging from 6th grade to high school but as young as 3rd and 4th grade. I currently reside in San Antonio where I teach middle school mariachi in an inner city district. Teaching music to children has been my love my passion, my calling, and a gift from God and I wake up every morning grateful and loving what I do.

The word en-joy is just that. To be in joy. From learning how to play my trumpet when I was in 6th grade to becoming a leader and a more proficient player in high school, to actually decide to make music my career teaching the next generation of young musicians how to play has just been a sheer joy in making and teaching music. I have loved every moment of it. The good and the bad, the victories and losses and the failures and successes.

Teaching, as a profession began with the passion and interest in my middle and high school experiences in band. I had amazing teachers and a happy childhood growing up in a rural community. I developed my confidence in playing and leadership as I progressed through high school and was given tasks to teach my peers how to march and sectionalize and prepare music during summer band. After graduation I decided that I didn't want this musical experience to end so I went to college to study music education and have been the best 4 years of my early adult life. I knew then that it was a calling and that I wanted to give back to the next generations of music students the way it was taught to me. Those aesthetic feelings of reward after working hard towards musical goals never go away so I was hooked for life. 25 years later I am bewildered on where the years have gone.

Band director for 25 years, most of which, as head director of a program, grades 6th grade through high school. Marching band, concert band, jazz, and mariachi. Graduate of Texas A & M university-Kingsville, 1990-Bachelor of Music. Excellent Texas teacher evaluations in the proficient, accomplished and distinguished  categories.

On playing trumpet, the first concept is tone. How to get a good sound on your instrument. But even before playing the actual instrument, tone originates from the understanding of how the lip muscles work when bringing them together to create a "buzz" on the lips. (I use the word "mom" to bring the lips comfortably together as a first step). The lip "buzz" then transfers over to the mouthpiece where the goal is to create that "buzz" on and through the mouthpiece with as little "airyness" in the buzz as possible. You can even say that the mouthpiece IS the instrument while the trumpet is the amplifier of that solid buzz sound. Following good tonal quality is posture, air, lip flexibility and technique, although there are various other concepts of trumpet pedagogy being taught simultaneously , successively and gradually.

Most of my career it has typically been grades 6th through 12th. (Middle school to high school) One year, however, I was in a district where I taught 3rd/4th grade recorder and the students learned very well how to read music and rhythms and play the instrument. At that same district, I introduced 5th grade students beginning band along with the 6th grade class, which typically is when you start-in the 6th grade, but the 5th grade students understood the concepts and learned well. Overall, my career has been working with economically disadvantaged students and families in the districts that I have been employed in, both rural and urban. It just came to be that way. But I have been amazed and astounded by the humble, hard working students that I have come in contact with over the years. Some have gone on to become teachers themselves. Which makes me very proud.

Look for a teacher who will not only teach you what's on the printed page but one who will take you beyond to a level of thinking and engagement of reading between the notes and give you tools and tips to go past the norm.

So many special, unique and heartwarming events have transpired over the years that it's difficult to peg just one. But, just recently, the one that comes to mind at this moment is where a former student of mine, who is a fourth grade classroom teacher but still a violin musician and mariachi singer, as she was over 27 years ago as my student, was performing in a local cultural arts center as a musical guest, along with those students who had been taking marichi music classes, were presenting what they had learned over the semester. Another very special guest that evening was one the member of the world famous Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán-Mr. Arturo Vargas, a member for 18 years. With a local well-known and recognized mariachi playing as back-up, my former student sang her songs as well as a duet with Mr. Vargas. As the evening drew to a close and my former student was concluding her set she had the attention of the audience and explained her educational experiences that brought her to that very moment on stage. She began by expressing the importance and the purpose of the event and the education behind it. She recognized on stage her former student who was a violin player who was performing with the local mariachi. Then she proceeded to tell that her personal experiences as a musician stem way back to her high school years and to a special teacher that taught her mariachi and was the reason for her doing what she was doing today. I was taken completely by surprise as she called my name out from the audience and asked me to stand up and be recognized. I was so overwhelmed that it brought me to tears. As a teacher, my motive was to feel, all over again, those days of success when winning a contest that your director had drilled in you day in and day out. About setting goals, about overcoming challenges both as a musician and in teenage life. Those ideals only make you stronger as you become an adult. Any gesture of gratitude or thanks that you will happen to receive from a student is mere happenstance and not guaranteed. I don't teach for the glory of recognition. I teach for the Glory of God and this calling and the blessings that I have received from it. When a former student stands in a spotlight and proclaims her experience and credits you as part of her succes in life, that is truly beyond words.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What do I want to accomplish by taking lessons?

Am I ready to set up a routine of daily practice time by myself away from the lessons to apply what I have learned?

Where am I now in my playing, where do I want to be in 6 months time or a year?

Why do I want lessons in the first place? Is it to improve my position in my school band or am I doing it for enrichment?

How will music help me in my future academic goals?

Details

I have no standard pricing system for private lessons either online or in person since my professsional job was full time and my lessons were free weekly for my students as part of my contract.

The average professional private lesson, in person, that I have researched may begin at $30/$40 an hour and up. If I were teaching in person, my rate would be $30 an hour. During this crisis, teaching online, I would begin at $25 an hour but that can be negotiable. My focus is on my delivery of the concept and the learning success of the student.
