About Bruce

Trumpet player Bruce Daugherty has been a core member of the Millar Brass Ensemble since 1991 and is recorded on their last nine compact disc releases. The group received national recognition for their contribution to the successful cross-over recording “Heigh Ho Mozart!” (Delos) and is considered to be one of the best brass ensembles in the United States. Daugherty maintains a busy freelance schedule throughout Chicago and the Midwest. Originally from Seattle, he received his Master of Music degree from Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois).

Daugherty is Assistant Band Director and private trumpet instructor at New Trier High School in Winnetka, IL. He was Chamber Brass Coach at Midwest Young Artists, a youth music conservatory in northern Illinois, for 15 years. Quintets he has coached have been selected to participate in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. He was also co-director of MYA’s Big Bands. He founded Brassmeisters, a popular summer program for young brass players, at Elgin Community College.

He earned his Master of Music degree at Northwestern University with Vincent Cichowicz. Daugherty has performed with many area orchestras, including the Elgin Symphony, Illinois Chamber Symphony, Illinois Philharmonic, South Bend Symphony, and Lake Forest Symphony.

Daugherty has studied with Arnold Jacobs, Barbara Butler and Vincent Cichowicz.

About the lesson

We arrange a mutually agreeable time for a first lesson where I go over some basic principles to see where the student is coming from. In the first lesson, we also try each other out to see if it's a good fit personality-wise. Lessons are tailored to each individual student, their strengths and their needs.

I have taught trumpet players of all ages and levels. Several of my former students perform professionally in classical, jazz and other settings, while others are successful music teachers. Many more go on to play trumpet in college as part of a well-rounded experience, even if they do not plan to earn a living with their instrument.

Make sure your new teacher is a good fit for you, and that your lessons make playing fun! You will need to put in the work and should practice daily. If you are doing that and your teacher still says you're not progressing, and it seems like you are always in trouble in your lessons, you probably need to find another teacher that fits your learning style better.
