About Laura
Praised for her gorgeous tone and wonderful technique, cellist Laura Sullens is a passionate performer and teacher and hopes to inspire others through her music.
After seeing a cello on TV and falling in love with the sound, Laura began playing cello at age 11 by signing up to join her middle school’s orchestra. She started private lessons soon after, studying first with Bonnie Scruggs and later Jean Beaudoin. Laura has performed in orchestras as principal cellist at numerous esteemed venues, such as Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco and Carnegie Hall. She began freelancing professionally in her community when she was 14, as well as participating yearly in the All County and Western Regional All State orchestras.
I believe that anyone is capable of learning an instrument. I had an extremely unconventional upbringing —quite unlike that of many mainstream classical musicians—and didn’t begin playing until later in my childhood, but I still managed to become successful at my craft. Because of my background, I can relate to a wide range of students, and I hope to instill in them a sense of confidence and self-reliance, as well as a strong technical foundation on the cello. Through discipline, determination, and technique, anything is possible!
