About Alison

Alison started playing the violin at the age of 2 & 1/2 in Detroit, MI. Her earliest teachers at the Detroit Community School (no-longer-existing) were students of Dorothy Delay at the famed Juilliard School in New York. Her Mother & Father were (and still are) professional musicians and teachers, known throughout the Metro Detroit area. Her parents both earned B.A.'s in music at Bowling Green University, moving to MI to pursue teaching certificates and in the case of her father, doctoral work in Music Composition at the University of Michigan. Her mother, a classical violin & viola teacher began her teacher certifications in the Suzuki violin & viola method while Alison was still a young child, so although Alison's private teachers were not specifically Suzuki teachers, Alison studied the Suzuki repertoire and attended Suzuki workshops and camps throughout Michigan, as well as in Steven's Point, WI, Chicago, Il, & Columbus, OH. During her high school years, Alison performed in the Detroit Civic Symphony, the Dearborn Symphony, the Scandanavian Symphony and more. She also performed in the Fairlane Youth Chamber Orchestra as part of their string ensemble, and around the Detroit Area with a string quartet that was part of this organization. During the summers, Alison attended the Interlochen Fine Arts Camp every year she was age-eligible, as well as a Violin Intensive camp at Indiana University for one summer. Alison began teaching a few elementary-aged students, while still in high school. For college, Alison received 2 degrees from Michigan State University: a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Humanities, which was comprised of concentrations in 3 areas-Music, Dance, and Telecommunications, which had some overlap with her additional B.A. in Theatre. During her time at MSU, Alison performed with the symphony on scholarship, worked as a Symphony Music Librarian, and performed with the Vocal Chorale. Studying private voice lessons, and teaching voice lessons to high school students was also a part of her degree. During this time, she also performed professionally with the Midland Symphony.

Following college, Alison focused on her work as an actor and vocalist for several years, performing professionally in Summer Stock, Regional, Children's & Dinner Theatres throughout MI, and furthering her studies with University of Detroit-Mercy's theatre-abroad program in Greece, and with the British American Drama Academy in Oxford, England. After returning from Europe and working in the Box Office during the grand re-opening of the Detroit Opera House, Alison found herself with a unique opportunity to try living in Los Angeles. After a couple of weeks here, she found work in a television production office, and continued to work in or around the Entertainment Business for roughly 10 years before having her own family.

Alison knew that she wanted her children to be a part of a Suzuki violin program, and after a few years, people began asking if she would teach their children. Now that Alison's children are school-age she can only accommodate a very small number of students into her schedule, but she absolutely loves teaching students of every age, from complete beginners, to college prep to adults. Alison is involved with a Suzuki program and therefore her students can opt to be involved with it also, or to just participate in the 2 annual recitals. Currently her youngest student is 5, but started with her at 4 & 1/2, and her oldest is in 10th grade and performs in her high school orchestra.

I am a 3rd generation music teacher. My grandfather was a piano teacher, my mother & sister are Suzuki violin & viola teachers, and my father was a school music teacher & a professional jazz musician who could play and teach every instrument, but focused on Saxophone, clarinet & flute. I started teaching overflow violin students from my mother’s studio in Michigan when I was in high school. I have been teaching in the San Fernando valley since 2014 when my children were small.

Seeing a current student win the 2nd place prize at the Topanga Banjo & Fiddle contest, and watching my students participate in the Suzuki graduation concerts in the beautiful Zimmerman Auditorium at the famous Colburn School in downtown Los Angeles. Also watching my students perform solos on our local fall & spring recitals, and watching my students perform in their high school orchestra concerts and the CSUN youth orchestra.
