About Marissa

Students who study with me foster a love for music that will follow them the rest of their life. In our lesson, we find ways to problem solve, overcome adversity, create a routine, tap into our inner creativity, and be apart of something larger than ourselves. In doing so, lessons serve them well beyond just music, and make us more compassionate, more well rounded human beings.

My studio is a safe space, and my foundation as a teacher is that everyone deserves patience, kindness, compassion, and integrity from me.

Music has always been my greatest passion. I love that I get to help students create and find this passion within themselves. Just as my mentors influenced me in my journey, I am privileaged to step into this space to mentor and guide my students.

I got started teaching as soon as I got to my undergraduate college. I began pursuing an education degree and got the opportunity to do private lessons. This revealed to me how deeply I loved to teach, and I decided to pursue performance to make myself the best player I could be to become the highest level private instructor.

I have my Masters of Music in Viola performance from the University of Minnesota Twin-Cities, my bachelors degree in Music Performance from Luther College, and have completed training and certification through level one in Suzuki. I have recently begun certification in the "Violin Technique Method" with Dr. Stephanie Allen, and will be applying this to viola as well as violin.

About the lesson

I begin by gaging where a student is at in their life's journey. Perhaps they've already begun their instrument, or maybe they don't even own one yet and need help purchasing. These initial lessons serve to help me understand where I need to pick up from and start our journey together. From there, we can create a technical regiment, find repertoire that suites their level, and begin working on healthy practice habits to help them reach their goal.

I have worked with students as young as 4, and as old as 67. I have also worked with students from high risk home situations, and students on the spectrum. I always focus on each individuals needs with a great deal of compassion and patience, which makes me a preferred teacher for students with learning difficulties.

I would definitely tell them to pick a teacher they can see themselves growing with! Your teacher is on this journey with you, and if they make you nervous or you can't see growth happening with them, you should pursue other options!

Since COVID, I have had the pleasure of being vulnerable with my students. We all are experiencing a great deal of stress trying to adapt to this new norm. I was honored when a student felt comfortable to confide in me her struggles, and I shared my own. This was very special to me.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
A student should first lay out their goals for lessons, and think through how the teacher will help them achieve these goals. Will the teacher want them to fit into the same mold as every other student in their studio, or cater lessons to their individual needs.

I have adopted a tuition system, where students pay a flat monthly rate based on their lesson length. This begins as low as $80 a month for 15 minute weekly lessons, and increases based on lesson length.
