About Helen

I want nothing more than for my students to be self-suffient, painlessly. Art is not goal oriented for me as a teacher. I don't use competition or pressure as teaching tools. I like to follow my students' lead with taste, style and pace. The process, the enjoyment of the experience as a whole, is my investment as a teacher. I teach music theory in tiny bites right from the start. I use a lot of repetition and teach music theory almost phoenetically so that it flows naturally, like any language. I am well versed and trained as a touring musician in fiddle, rock, celitic, old-time and bluegrass as well as classically trained by Ladonna Smith of the Birmingham Suzuki Violin Association and have a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Bennington College. I've taugh violin for 10 ten years and was a full time nanny for 12 years prior to that.

Violin is famously complicated and difficult. I enjoy working with my students to set their own pace, be patient with themselves, take lots of chances and give themselves lots of passes. Witnessing the joy that comes with self-acceptance through learning this beast of an instrument is incredibly satisfying work. Ultra-beginners are my very favorite because we get to develop our own language through music and build taste and technique from the ground up.

About the lesson

I like to get to know them a little bit right up front. What kinds of music do you like listening to, what brought you to this instrument in particular, who is your favorite vioinist/fiddle player, etc? And I like to know what goals they have in mind and custom fit their experience appropriately.

Lessons with Helen are AMAZING. She is so talented. She handles all faces of my 9 year old daughter with poise and humor. She inspires my daughter to learn and love music. I look forward to lessons too. I really can't think of enough positive WONDERFUL things to say about Helen! If your child wants to learn violin, I RECOMMEND wholeheartedly with bells and whistles and streamers and balloons.
