Shin’ichi Suzuki

Dr. Tammy Linn embraces the teaching philosophy of Dr. Shin’ichi Suzuki which he based on language learning. Supported by a nurturing home and studio environment, Dr. Linn aspires to help students of all ages discover gratification in music making and using it as a means to make the world a more beautiful place.

Dr. Linn earned her Bachelor of Music from the New England Conservatory, Master of Music from the North Carolina School of the Arts, and Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Texas at Austin. She remains indebted to all the wonderful people who have nurtured her in her musical journey, especially to her Suzuki teachers and mentors, Barbara Barber and Brian Lewis. Dr. Linn currently resides in Austin, TX where she teaches, freelances, and helps manage Brian Lewis’ career. She also performs with the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra in Houston. Dr. Linn would love to tell you about the music ministry in Cuba with which she is involved!

Dr. Linn has completed Suzuki violin teacher training and several enrichment courses with Barbara Barber, Joanne Bath, Mark Bjork, Ronda Cole, Carol Dallinger, Linda Fiore, Joseph Kaminsky, Edward Kreitman, Charles Krigbaum, Cathy Lee, Susan Levine, Alice Joy Lewis, Mark Mutter, Marilyn O’Boyle, Laurie Scott, Linda Shackford, Edmund Sprunger, William Starr, and Craig Timmerman. Dr. Linn loves continuing education and is a regular participant at the Starling-DeLay Symposium on Violin Studies at Juilliard and at the biennial conferences of the Suzuki Association of the Americas. She has taught at Suzuki institutes and workshops in Colorado, Kansas, Texas and Utah and has had a number of articles published by the American Suzuki Journal and the American String Teacher.

I love the sound of the violin and I love sharing that sound through teaching and performing. I enjoy helping each student find his/her unique musical voice.

I began teaching privately when I was in high school at age 16. I took my first Suzuki teacher training course when I was 24 and have been teaching with the Suzuki Method for over 24 years now.

I have three violin performance degrees and have taken Suzuki Teacher Training through all 10 Suzuki violin books. I am committed to on-going training and attend teacher development workshops and conferecnes whenever possible.

About the lesson

I invite prospectives students to observe me teaching some lessons first to see if what I offer as a teacher is appealing to their family situation. We take time to discuss my teaching philosphy and expectations as well as their goals before deciding if we might be a good match for working together.

I enjoy working with students of all ages and levels. My students have spanned from beginner to college level players with an age range between 3-74 years old.

Observe prospective teachers in their teaching environment. You can learn a lot about their style and if their manner might suit your family well.

My studio participated in a challenge to perform for 1000 children. We all became very creative in finding ways to achieve that and, in the end, we surpassed our goal by far. It was rewarding to make an effort to share our music with many young listeners.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Violin is a challenging instrument and it takes commitment to lessons and practice in order to be successful at it. Before commencing lessons, I would identify how and when you are going to incorporate a practice routine into your life. I would not select a teacher based on convenient location and/or most economical fees.

Prices depend on the length of the private lesson times. Below is how my lesson sessions are currently structured:

3 MONTH SESSION

(9 private lessons, 1 master class, 3 group lessons, 1 recital rehearsal & 1 recital)

$372 with 30 minute lessons (Book 1)

$489 with 45 minute lessons (Books 2 & 3)

$606 with 60 minute lessons (Books 4 and up)
