Deon was my lecturer at UJ he effectively taught me the foundation of Informatics and computer science; his lessons provided me with the tools I needed to learn and develop my skills in analytical and structured thinking, problem solving, algorithm development, data structures and user interfaces.
He made tackling such difficult to teach subjects easy, he focused on making them easier to understand by breaking them down to bite size pieces while still providing enough depth to keep me interested even when I started to become proficient. One of the best things about his class was the clear goals and expectations.
Very soon I began working for Deon in teaching these same subjects as a peer tutor, his expertise and knowledge enabled it to be a fun and fulfilling experience.

I have been taught by Deon before (undergraduate and postgraduate level) and he has the ability to make a complex problem easy to understand. He was able to see where I misunderstood a concept and in explaining it to me again was able to improve my coding abilities significantly.

Deon (or Dr Cotterrell as I know him) taught me the fundamentals of object oriented programming during my first year at university in 2016.
Building on that foundation, I ended up referencing his research in my own Masters on AI agents in 2021.
Now, in 2025, working as a solutions architect on AI projects, I still use fundamental knowledge of programming taught to me by Dr Cotterrell.
